Transgender rights reforms allowing Tasmanian parents to choose whether to include their baby’s gender on a birth certificate has moved a step closer to becoming law after a Labor and Greens bill passed the state’s lower house.

The changes were passed on Tuesday night by the casting vote of Liberal Speaker Sue Hickey, who voted against her party.

The bill, which also allows people over 16 to change the gender on their birth certificate by filling out a statutory declaration, was welcomed by the activist group Transforming Tasmania.

Australian passports now offer gender option 'X' for intersex people

In a move the Australian government hopes will help remove discrimination against intersex or transgender people, the country's passports will now offer three options: male, female and indeterminate, the government said Thursday.

"This initiative is in line with the Australian Government’s commitment to remove discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or sex and gender identity," according to the Australian Passport Office. "The policy removes unnecessary obstacles to recording a person’s preferred gender in their passport."

Those who do not identify themselves as male or female will no longer be required to check off the "M" or "F" box under gender, but instead will have the option of checking "X," according to the new passport rules.

There is no possibility that year three students, boys and/or girls, in WA state schools, or any other Labor state school in Australia will be forced to dress up in such garb as burka's etc, and at the same time explore different gender roles. How do I know this, because the total commitment of Labor governments in Australia is to quality education, and that has come from the mouths of Labor politicians like Bill Shorten. For Labor the three R's, reading, writing and arithmetic are of paramount impotence, nothing else matters, and under Labor there is no time for anything provocative in schools. I can see nothing but scholastic endeavours being undertaken by state school students who are fortunate enough to be under a Labor governments care. There will be no time, even if some had such desires, for what you have posted from the UK tabloid in Labor run state schools! Maybe strange thing could happen in Coalition controlled schools, but not in Labor ones!
