As for the Enlightenment, what I have been trying to say, perhaps not very well, and against your misinterpretation, is that the rights and wisdoms fought for so bitterly, and won, over the past millenium (well, since before Pericles and ancient Athens, actually) should be available to every person in the world.

The Enlightenment doesn't belong to any one particular group, or society, or country, or (Christ help us) 'culture'. It, with all its faults, is a human achievement. Criticising what might have been done implicitly under its aegis, is an easy and very cheap trick, a luxury which should be reserved for kids in junior high school, trying to show how clever they are.

And for Jihadists, who are ultimately so viciously opposed to everything, every right, every step forward, that it stands for.

So which side are you on ?
