*Note that the workers lived in humpies fashioned from flattened oil drums*

Note that people all over the world still live in humpies. Note
that only 20 years ago, some farmers in WA were still living in
the back of their shearing sheds, in the WA heat.

Note that millions of Africans live in humpies, because nobody is
prepared to risk capital investment, in case its expropriated, just
like in Iran. Note that the Brits in the Iranian desert were not
exactly living it up, when they searched for oil.

Note that you Poirot, should get out more to see how the world really
works :)

Yabby,

Note that the Brits were "investing in capital" only as far as their own interests were concerned...if you think housing workers in humpies made from flattened oil drums is perfectly fine, emanating from a "deal" which woefully disadvantaged Iranian sovereignty over its resources, and which the Brits flatly refused to "fairly" renegotiate is right, then so be it.

I'd hasten to add that the shelters built by Africans are at least suitable to their environment. Even in this day and age I would expect any company investing in capital in order to undertake profitable resource extraction in developing countries, is beholden to look after its workers. The imperial mindset didn't hold to such ethical considerations - and it seems you're in full agreement with that.

Well of course. Do you think they were walking around the desert,
being threatened by local bandits etc, for the fun of it? The world
was a tough place, 100 years ago.

Wow, so the three bits of tin and cardboard in some of the slums
are suitable to their environment? This whilst African leaders live
it up in splendor. Think again.

Well yes, we have moved on by 100 years. Most Western companies do.
Most Chinese and third world companies still don't bother.

I lived in more than one hut made out of kero tins flattened out.
Poirot bit surprised you need to look back at Imperial England to defend Muslim hate.
Doubt it will convince anyone.
Csteele yes but seems to me in an effort to blind the debate we are clutching at straws, that never existed in any case.
Around the time you speak of few if any transportable houses existed, for any race or color in such places.
Arabs lived in tents, quite happy to too.

Yabby,

"Three bits of tin and some cardboard..."

I really don't know why I bother sometimes : )...I was referring to traditional shelters - not those fashioned from cast-off bits of industrialisation by people often forced off the land and onto the outskirts of urban centres.

Belly,

So I'm "defending" Muslim hate am I?

Where have I defended Muslim hate? (link please)

I'm seeing a considerable amount of hate and fear on this thread to counter that seen in the riot, but I can't remember defending it, from either side.

Another case of Belly fashioning something out of nothing.....

On second thoughts, Belly, don't bother.

I think I've now definitely had a belly-full of this thread.
