Paul,

Nuclear power is cheaper per kilowatt generated than either solar or wind. Also it is far safer. There are far fewer deaths per gigawatt generated for nuclear than any other power source.

That failure cannot happen again.
Anyway more people die mining coal but you still use electricity.
You are not a hypocrite are you?

Bazz people die from alcohol as well but I drink in moderation. Its not hypocritical to say there is a better way. It really fills me with confidence when you say "That failure cannot happen again" is that to say a NP station can never blow up again or Chernobyl can never blow up again, which one is it, if its a NP station then I don't believe you. I don't understand the logic, more people die from snake bite than spider bite so its better to get bitten by a spider than a snake.

Shadow Minister, you must be a Liberal voter, the people who reduce everything down to dollars and cents.

"There are far fewer deaths per gigawatt generated for nuclear than any other power source".

I don't understand this, is it people putting their pinky in the toaster, or fairy lights on the Chrissy tree?

How does coal fired power rate on your death scale, say in a place like China?

What you fail to point out is coal, peat, gas and oil fired power results in 98.5% of all deaths relating to power generation and all the others, including nuclear, put together equal 1.5%.

Paul,

Your point is?

I was comparing non GHG emitting technologies as were you. China's record is abysmal. In the western world coal, solar, wind have roughly the same danger level in the generation, whilst nuclear is a fraction of these.

Of these only nuclear can provide base load, or consistent power at peak demand at roughly 7pm.

To replace fossil fuel energy production, nuclear energy production will have to start in Australia now and increase by more than 10% each year for the next 40 years to meet increases in demand and replace fossil fuels by 2050. This is not sustainable. Australia has no need to go nuclear when sustainable alternatives are available to us now. Australia is in an ideal position to be a World leader in sustainable energy production.
SM where do you see Australia's first nuclear power station being built?

I would propose that the nuclear power stations are built on the sites of existing brown coal sites such as Hazelwood. The infrastructure is aleady present, and the area is far from pristine.

As far as energy generation is concerned, there is no realistic renewable alternative to fossil fuels. At best they can replace a fraction of the demand before they run into the base load requirement problem.

PS you must be green to be so divorced from reality. To make the statements you have I would guess you have no experience in power generation.
