As I have said on this discussion site "Is someone willing to give cigarettes the butt?" - after when about five years my father (who was a smoker) started to have a heart attack whilst driving and later collapsed in a GP clinic - and has since given up smoking all together.

I had tried to get him and my mother to give up since I was about eight years of age. Too many people have seen these graphic images too much who are smokers and are now simply used to them - but to link it to increases in smoking is purely unintelligent.

I stand by my comments that cigarettes should be phased out in Australia and I am waiting for OUG to tell me: "that the case against smoking based on bogus statistics and downright lies." Direct quote.

Sorry but doesn't this discussion prove that more needs to be done to get people away from smoking and strong action is the only way to go?

Nathan, I feel the current anti smoking methods are working, and will continue to work. If cigarettes are "phased out" that effectively means banning/prohibition. Prohibition NEVER works regarding recreational drugs. It just creates a bigger black market ... just look at the alcohol prohibition in the USA in the 1920s, it was a DISMAL failure.

Currently cigarette smoking has been demonised and discredited, and this has worked quite well. If people feel ashamed to smoke, then they are FAR less likely to smoke.

The 2 most harmful drugs known to society are alcohol and tobacco. If alcohol was also demonised and discredited in the same way that tobacco is, alcohol abuse would be far less. It would be tougher to achieve though, because of the EXTREME power of the alcohol industry, but it IS achievable.

Banning recreational drugs like alcohol and tobacco is not the way to go. The way to go is a combination of factual education regarding harmful affects and social demonisation and discrediting of the drugs.
