I see this thread has deteriorated in slagging off smokers and smoking which is completely against the point.

My father died at age 58 from emphysema, which is a really terrible way to go, and what is clear is that there are no health benefits from smoking whatsoever, and the expectation is that it will shorten your life by a decade or two and you can expect a decreased quality of life followed by a nasty death. Now that we are all in happy agreement that smoking needs to be stopped the question is how to do it.

Smoking has been decreasing rapidly from laws that make smoking expensive, unattractive and antisocial. The question whether the additional plain packaging laws have further accelerated this decline or reversed is yet to be resolved but I ask yet another:

If the Australian is correct and the PPL has slowed or reversed the decline in smoking will the left represented by Paul, Nhoj, etc support their appeal?

Dear Shadow Minister,

Your title for this thread was “Plain packaging....Labor boosts smoking rates!”, but even the Australian's article does not support that contention. It's own figures, or rather those commissioned by British American Tobacco, show that after taking population increase into account the rates have fallen rather than risen.

Therefore, unless you have access to other figures outside theirs, you should withdraw the contention as it is patently false.

Also in the opening post you asserted “the plain packaging laws that in a single stroke have managed to reverse the 2 decade long downward trend in smoking.” Yet reversing a downward trend must by definition mean it is now going up. There is no evidence to show this is happening and plenty to show the opposite.

In your latest post you have softened your rhetoric a little; “The question whether the additional plain packaging laws have further accelerated this decline or reversed is yet to be resolved”. Are we to assume you have retreated from your very strong opening assertions? Perhaps stating that for the record would be in order.

Finally my great concern is that the tobacco industry and the Murdoch press would only have seen fit to forward this story if they thought it was going to assist lobbying to have the reform quashed. With ex-Senator Minchin, a person demonstrably in the pocket of the Tobacco industry and still influential within the Liberal Party, on their side this may well have been an opening salvo. My prediction is the Abbott government will move to amend this legislation, perhaps not in this term but the again who knows.

In response to phasing out smoking and it working or not working - so what. It means all people cannot buy these toxic products over the shelves of a basic shop or a supermarket, which is easy to do. It is like buying a loaf of bread or some fruit or vegetables. People generally don't do that on the black market.

If some people have to break Australia's laws - and face court action as a result so be it. Existing smokers have become used this packaging - otherwise they would have quit a long time ago. Simple.
