Shadow Minister, a quick look at the figure you linked to would illuminate my post perfectly. Even better, go back and look at the original data.

While you are at it, you might like to consider which of the two propositions are true:

Smoking rates have increased since the introduction of plain packaging as you claimed in your first post on this thread; or

Smoking rates have decreased in that time as shown in the figure you linked to in your penultimate post.

Take all the time you need

AG,

Please read the link in my post. The smoking rates increased in the 12 months after the PPL was implemented, until the huge increase in excise caused them to drop for the next 6 months. While the net result was a drop in smoking, the only logical reading of the graph is that the PPL was not the cause for any of the drop in smoking rates.

I hope that this is not too difficult a concept for you to grasp.

To be clear, whatever change is claimed it was not worth the investment of taxpayers' dollars where there are other priorities, in health too, that should have come first.

Australia is bringing in thousands of migrants who smoke, with their extended families, some of whom would likely smoke as well, to come.

An alternative could have been to put the effort into researching and treating the causes of smoking that is rife among Aborigines ans particularly the pregnant Aborigine women who smoke and most do. Unfortunately the political correctness of the political 'Progressives' would never have countenanced any such initiatives, despite the well documented harm being done to the babies, infants and youth who grow up in households where there is a continual pall of tobacco smoke.

Just show show how ridiculous the plain smoking campaign was and to demonstrate that it was the expensive, wasteful political stunt of a flawed PM and a government that was failing in the polls and needed a convenient diversion to occupy the media and the Parliament.

I don't care what policies governments adopt or where they set the priorities for the expenditure of the money compulsorily taken from citizens. However I do care that governments take advice from citizens on their expectations and priorities, that there is transparency in decision-making and that value for money is obtained and demonstrated for money expended.

I would like to correct the para in the earlier post that should have read,

"Just to show show how ridiculous the plain smoking campaign was and to demonstrate that it was the expensive, wasteful political stunt of a flawed PM and a government that was failing in the polls and needed a convenient diversion to occupy the media and the Parliament."

I apologise for my typos. I either draft and post in haste with average quick editing, or I don't post at all.

There's no doubt, the evidence proves that the smoking rates greatly increased after the PPL was introduced. No amount of whinging from the left whingers can change that. Yes, another Labor failure.
