I applaud your suggestions, however why limit National Service to that of 'Non-Military' ? Why should some do the 'heavy lifting', and others not have to place their lives on the line, in order to defend this great country of ours ?

I do profoundly agree, an 'authentic' (bona fide) conscientious objector (religious pacifist), may be excused from combatant duties for sure. Though, their unique prominence per se, would not necessarily excuse them from participating in non-combatant duties eg. Medical Corps etc.

However, with the exception of those already cited above, all others should be compulsorily required to do their military duty, without the benefit of having your marble drawn, as was the inequitable practice during the Vietnam days. A case of 'all in' I believe !

I'm sure you'd agree INDIVIDUAL, as well as many others herein, that if you wish to live in this magnificent country of ours, then it's incumbent upon us all, to do our very best to defend it, if and when it becomes necessary. Quite similar to the successful Swiss model !

I hold no truck with those who arrive here, and who immediately manage to access our exceptionally generous welfare facilities, and if called upon, would not be prepared to actively defend this country, that's been so very generous and altruistic towards them and theirs !

You are of course right however, I believe in non-military national service as a course into adulthood in both age & mentality. Once some degree of that mentality (are you listening (Paul1405 et al ?) has rubbed off on young adults it will lead to a greater sense of belonging which in turn leads to a greater sense of responsibility & consciencousness & more people will join the defence force. Imagine the improvement in defence & law & order.
Age eligible immigrants must be included & it will speed up/improve their assimilation & hopefully make them shake some of the baggage.
The way our society is presently going we're now paying the fine for letting the lefties have some say. That fine is unfair as it is unaffordable.

Hell even Gillard had not got round to fining us for breathing, although I'll bet she thought about it. About the only thing most of us get fined for is breaking the road rules.

If even an old hoon like me, [Luddys description of me] can manage to abide by our ridiculously low nanny state speed limits, it kind of proves that getting fined is optional.

We even have a pretty fair idea of the cost for various digressions in advance, so we really do chose to make those contributions to Newman & company in advance.

It really does seem quite fair to me to charge everyone the same price to drive at 20 or 30Km/H over the speed limit. Anything else would be discriminatory I believe.

I do understand precisely what you're saying. The notion of some form of National Service, will (hopefully) furnish many of our young people with a more distinct direction in their lives. Therefore providing them with a greater degree of purpose, and hopefully, develop a greater degree of social maturity in both their lives and their perspective. Good thinking there INDIVIDUAL !
