The most obvious example is Switzerland, but firstly they have better geographical protection in the form of forbidding snowy mountains and secondly, they pay the most bitter price for it - conscription, which is plainly a form of slavery.

Australia's natural resources are too tempting to steal. Protecting ourselves by ourselves is technically possible, but would require most of our resources, making us poor in every other way except having a large and mighty army. Some of us will end up literally hungry or at least malnourished as a result.

Besides the extreme financial cost, an army that is capable of defending our long coast-line, will have to be built on conscripts. Having suffered as a conscript myself, there is nothing more horrible than that.

So no thanks, let the stupid Americans provide the deterrence instead: yes it comes with a price, but not as high.

At least, let us not be involved with the rest of the world any more than the minimum required to maintain the American deterrence.
