Dear SPQR,

“Several days before the annual Buddha’s Enlightenment celebrations, the Taejôkkwangjôn, the main Dharma Hall, a large building of ancient origin at Kûmsansa Temple is completely burned to the ground in an event which makes top news throughout the nation. The Hall is listed as National Treasure Number 476, and is the central hall in a temple which is a regional headquarters and major monastic training center for the Chogye Order. A man active in a local church is apprehended at the scene” “Although he admitted to the crime, he is released without being charged.”

“A fundamentalist Christian by the name of Yang Shinha from the Tamna Church on Chejudo Island is apprehended after setting fire to two temples – Kwanûmjôngsa and Taegaksa – completely burning them to the ground.”

“In the early morning hours, a fire is set at Pômôsa Temple in Pusan, a major monastic training center of the Chogye Order and regional headquarters. The fire completely destroys the Myôngbujôn (Chijang Bodhisattva Hall- a funeral hall), taking with it 16 priceless altar paintings of the Buddha.”

“Several days before the annual Buddha’s Enlightenment celebrations, the Chônggagwôn, the main Dharma Hall on the Kyôngju campus of Dongguk University is completely burned to the ground. Arson is suspected but no one is apprehended.”

“The huge main Dharma Hall and a temple dormitory at Potasa Temple, Oksudong, Sôngdonggu, Seoul are completely burned to the ground. A 23-year old follower of the Taesônjillihoe (Great Conversion Truth Church) is arrested at the scene.”

“The Yôngdo Church in Pusan organizes to prevent a temple from being built beside them, claiming that they “cannot accept the construction of a place of idol worship” near them.”

“At Hyundai High School, all students are required to attend church services, and their attendance at these services is reflected in their school records.”

All this in one of the most peaceful, affluent countries in the world, (did you know South Korean males buy over 20% of the world's male beauty products?) and it is getting worse. Only took a few short years.

*we only need to glance at Iran where the US through the CIA overthrew heir democratically elected government and installed the Shah....more so in the US-led invasion of Iraq this century.*

Ah Poirot, you mean that Govt which had nationalised the oil
industry in Iran, after it had been built, developed and financed
by the West. I remind you that it the role of Govt to protect the
interests of it citizens and if third world Govts think that it is
their right to steal assets because they can, they should not be
surprised when other Govts respond. Holding hands with Csteele
and singing Kumbayah, won't do it, I am afraid :)

As to Iraq, I remind you that a no fly zone had to be introduced
over the Kurds, to avoid Saddam gassing anymore of them. The
Kuwaitis asked the West to interfere, after he invaded them.
Saddam went out of his way to pretend that he had nuclear weapons,
for he assumed that if he could call their bluff, they would never
invade. Remember the weapons inspectors being hoodwinked at every
turn? Remember Saddam refusing to let them inspect many buildings?

Where I agree with you is that George W got it very wrong in how
he went about things. A couple of targeted missles could have taken
out Saddam and his boys, without the collateral damage. But then I
never did claim that George could actually walk and chew gum at the
same time. It shows the limits of democracy.

Belly old mate, if you and I ever meet, there will be lots of beers
to drink !

Yabby,

All is flawed it seems.

The US didn't seem too perturbed with the knowledge that Saddam was gassing the Iranians, while they were doing deals with him during the Iran-Iraq conflict....but then it wasn't in their interests to make too much noise over that particular fact.

I have to agree that it was damn impertinent of those Iranians to want a fair share of the profits from their own resources - and then they had the hide to democratically elect a government. Surely that sort of behaviour isn't what we enlightened Westerners expect from that part of the world.

(perhaps you should change your "Kumbaya" line. It's way past it's use-by date, and I think you've kept it beside the computer so long it's gone a little stale : )

*The US didn't seem too perturbed with the knowledge that Saddam was gassing the Iranians*

Well the Iranians were already busy killing Iranians, as Danielle
pointed out. The US is dammed if they do and dammed if they don't,
as somebody always complains.

*I have to agree that it was damn impertinent of those Iranians to want a fair share of the profits from their own resources*

Ah, so that justifies stealing all the assets and investments!

*perhaps you should change your "Kumbaya" line*

Oh no way! Its an evergreen and it suits you, the Greens and Csteele
to a T. so I will keep using it.
