"Hostages to be released by Hamas on Monday will need to be taught how to eat normally again after being starved in captivity, medics said.

Dr Michal Steinman, the chief nursing officer at Beilinson Hospital, said they would have had little to eat in the two years since Hamas launched its Oct 7 2023 attack, triggering the Israel-Hamas war.

“We have to be extremely careful because we are wary of overfeeding,” she said. The hospital is one of four centres in Israel due to receive the 20 hostages believed to still be alive."

I suspect the Gazans won't have that problem. Nor will the prisoners released by Israel.

mhaze,

Despite the memes and surface-level observations, famine in Gaza has been officially confirmed by the WHO and other UN bodies as of August 2025.

Acute malnutrition among children is widespread, with over 12,000 children under 5 now classified as severely affected:

It doesn’t take much intellectual honesty to realize that some open shops or charged phones in a few areas don’t disprove systemic starvation and infrastructure collapse. You can walk through a street in Kharkiv or Mosul and find a working cafe too - but it doesn’t mean all’s well.

And no - not every emaciated child was "medically ill." That’s a baseless generalisation. Starvation is confirmed via field data, not vibes.

If you want to discuss policy failures, fine. But mocking visible suffering, cherry-picking imagery, and brushing off famine warnings from every major humanitarian agency doesn’t make you the skeptical one.

It makes you the one falling for propaganda.

Lets all not forget that the genocide and atrocities in Palestine were facilitated and paid for by the United States, with their money, their weapons and their diplomatic cover and vetoes in the UNSC.

And no matter what Trump screams,
It's really all just a charade.

19. While Gaza re-development advances and when the PA reform programme is faithfully carried out, the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, which we recognise as the aspiration of the Palestinian people.

The Israelis will never allow Palestine to be ruled by Palestinians.

Well JD, you can believe the claims of those with a vested interest in there being a famine, (and I'm sure you will) but I'll go with neutral bodies who have no such vested interest. Organisations like the Famine Review Committee and many others who have found significant flaws in the methods of calculation used by WHO and other UN bodies.

Oh here's and interesting snippet.... UNRWA Post-Ceasefire Food Stock Assessment - "UNRWA Commissioner-General stated there is "enough food for the entire population of the Gaza Strip for 3 months," thanks to Israeli-facilitated deliveries. This admission, post-ceasefire, implies no ongoing famine, with 170+ aid trucks entering recently and 6,000 more awaiting. Aligns with videos showing Gazans appearing healthy/overweight, contradicting earlier malnutrition claims."

UNRWA, which famously employed some of the terrorists who perpetrated 7/10, before the ceasefire telling us its all doom and gloom. Now a few days later, its all sweetness and light.

"You can walk through a street in Kharkiv or Mosul and find a working cafe too ". If you say so!! Now do Nigeria or Sudan.

"not every emaciated child was "medically ill."
If you say so!!
But every time I saw such a photo or video, and the follow-up, it turned out the problem was quite different to what the activists claimed. There was one famous case where the NYT cropped a photo of an emaciated kid to hide his very plump brother who was also in the shot. But I'll wait for you to show me examples that disprove that

You're an idiot mhaze.

Whats with all these thousands of people killed just lining up for food?
They were out for a social event?
Lines of people holding out metal pots...

They wanted take-away instead of a home cooked meal that night?
Why are they all walking around now with bags of flour or rice?
They've got nothing better to do?
Just topping up the pandemic pantry?

Get em now, half price!
This weekend only!

What are you trying to tell me that Woolworths 40 stores in Gaza never closed during the last 24 months, and they never ran out of a single item?
Just come on in Gazans, load up your trolley with ready to go microwave meals. We've got fresh fruit and veg, pita breads, hot chickens and plenty of halal meats in our deli, no bacon!
Plenty for everyone.

One hint of a possible rolling blackout in the country and the whole supermarkets get cleaned out in 48 hours, toilet paper first.

'We've negotiated a special deal with the Israelis, our stores are non-Hamas certified, so you can take your time getting all your favourite brands, without any fear of being targeted by an air-strike while you shop!'

Next you'll tell me the 24hr Maccas stores in Gaza remained open for the entire past 2 years.
Take advantage our Loose change menu!
Just look for the golden arches.
Free wifi and clean amenities!

You are indeed and idiot, mhaze.

//I’ll go with neutral bodies... like the Famine Review Committee//

The FRC report you’re leaning on didn’t rule out famine - it said famine was “plausible” in Northern Gaza and noted that verification was impossible due to aid blockages and conflict. That’s not exoneration. It’s admission of obstruction.

//UNRWA says there’s enough food for 3 months//

UNRWA’s statement referred to stockpiled aid, not distribution. Aid agencies like WFP and UNICEF have repeatedly warned that food access is still heavily restricted - particularly in northern Gaza. Famine isn’t defined by how much food exists, but by how much people can access.

//Greta used a photo of a hostage//

One activist’s misstep doesn’t negate consistent reporting from MSF, WHO, Save the Children, and WFP - all documenting widespread acute malnutrition. You’re mistaking a bad tweet for a smoking gun.

//Kids were emaciated because of illness, not hunger//

Even if a handful had comorbidities, you’re ignoring population-wide data gathered using standard IPC methods. You’ve cited a single viral case involving a cropped photo. It’s not representative, and it’s not a counter to widespread nutrition surveys.

//Cellphones mean power wasn’t cut//

Phones and towers can run on solar panels or generators. Powering a mobile phone ≠ maintaining hospitals, desalination, or refrigeration. That’s what the power crisis was about.

//Well-stocked shops//

Even in failed states you’ll find stocked shops - for the few who can afford them. Famine assessments look at population-wide access, not PR footage.

//UN bodies have a vested interest//

Declaring famine forces political consequences - it’s not something UN agencies want to do. If anyone has a vested interest here, it’s those trying to avoid a declaration, not those who make one.

Cherry-picked optics and gotcha anecdotes don’t invalidate months of consistent field data. If you’ve got better evidence than the WHO, IPC, WFP and UNICEF, let’s see it.
