When the evidence was scant and those he relies on to tell him what to think were telling him falsehoods, Paul's only concern was whether to use the gallows or the guillotine on the officers. Now the evidence goes the other way, and Paul wants to await further evidence, which he hopes will prove that he wasn't led down the garden path...AGAIN.

As to assuming the police are innocent, I did no such thing. What I said was that the evidence will provide reasonable doubt and they will therefore no be convicted of murder. Nuance.
