More than 72% of Gen Z ‘don’t know nuclear power is low carbon energy’

Dimitri Macrokefalidis EnergyLive News:

Only 26% of people aged 18-24 understand that nuclear power is a low carbon source of electricity, compared with 76% for renewables such as wind and solar, according to a new poll by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Older people are more likely to say that nuclear power is low carbon. The poll found the level of understanding rising from 47% among 35 to 44-year olds to 61% among 65 to 74-year olds, although it remains well below levels seen for renewables.

Good on the Mech Eng’s for asking. I call “fake” on the protesters that tell us the world is at stake but can’t be bothered learning the basics.

So next time you see a bunch of kids, [under 30s] protesting on the street, just remember they are the worst educated, least knowledgeable members of the population.

They are also the most gullible, likely to form their opinions with very little actual knowledge of anything, except mobile phones.

How useful can their objection to nuclear power be, when 72% of them are not even aware that nuclear is a much lower CO2 emitter than ANY other power generation including wind & solar over the full lifetime of the unit.

I guess we can thank the take over of the education system by the ladies for such a glaring lack of knowledge in our youth. It would be interesting to find how many primary school teachers actually know this, & how many would try to pass it on to their students.

Dear Hasbeen,

«Only 26% of people aged 18-24 understand that nuclear power is a low carbon source of electricity»

This is not a matter of knowledge or understanding, but of terminology, hence youngsters are not quite incorrect:

When you speak of 'carbon', you refer to the chemical element with 6 protons and (usually) 6 neutrons, but when they speak of 'carbon', they speak of a symbolic evil entity which includes many aspects, including older people with carbonized brains and anything else that was invented before they were born.

Hasbeen, you're leaving out a very important detail: the survey was only conducted in Britain.

Your rhetoric also relies on the extremely dubious assumption that the protesters share the general population's ignorance of the subject. In reality, those who take enough of an interest to protest are likely to find out a lot more.

Hasbeen,

You sound jealous of young people. Can't take being old eh?

Mr O.

I think it's a deeper malady than that.

The depression of old age you struggle to comprehend, is an expression of the insecurity of the aging factor.
The aged are invariably sidelined, it's a struggle with the reality of the status of insignificance in society.
Resentment is too often the end product, with some pretty obvious outcomes here.

You'll get an argument against that idea of course.
Follow this link, it may give you some understanding of OLO behaviour.

Dear Hasbeen,

You ask why young people aren't as on board the nuclear option as yourself. Perhaps it is because old coots with an agenda are putting out crap like this;

"How useful can their objection to nuclear power be, when 72% of them are not even aware that nuclear is a much lower CO2 emitter than ANY other power generation including wind & solar over the full lifetime of the unit."

Just go to the Wikipedia page to see the breakdowns; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life-cycle_greenhouse-gas_emissions_of_energy_sources

The last IPCC report had onshore wind power slightly under nuclear with a median gCO2eq/kWh of 11.

Can you please try and make your points without fudging the figures. I'm sure you will understand a certain reticence of our young having the events in Japan etched into their minds.
