All the crims have no need of stealing a shotgun, they have access to all the firearms the law denies the honest citizen.

Fortunately the crims are usually more sensible, & don't use their weapons. It is usually only when high on grog or drugs they get silly enough to pack the hard stuff.

I agree Belly it is a major problem. I can't imagine my mother in law using a weapon to defend herself. Living alone on the Gold Coast we do worry about her, she doesn't even have a dog. We need more cops on night time patrols in many areas, but then how do we pay for that.

I'm trying to decide on a new dog. Our old Danish Shepard went to sleep, & didn't wake up a month back. I doubt she would have been much use the last couple of years, but she did look big. I'm leaning toward a Great Dane. They are really a big softy, not guard dog material, but their size does a lot to intimidate intruders.

That was WWI when there was no danger to Australia at all.

WWII and Vietnam saw compulsory service and such service was accepted by the majority of the people.

Conscription for Vietnam was only 'accepted' because most Australians weren't affected - just unlucky 18 year old males, whose lives were ruined by a bloody lottery. Disgusting! Shameful!

I Wanted to serve, was fit and playing first grade Rugby League

Indys constantly telling us national service is the answer, in my view, questions did it ever turn bad people to good
IF that service, as in some Nordic countries,is not just for war, it can be great help
Why not target those who commit crimes, and those who look likely to be on welfare for life
Say first offense a camp with education and life skills?
Indy would you except a brand new subject in every school life skills, say basics in behavior and too teaching about the end result of being a criminal
