Actually when you look at the footage he was not riding through a crowd. He was riding in a clear area in the middle of the people around the edge of the Show Ring. It's only when he got to the gate that he ran into problems like stupid people throwing the gate at the horse.

Someone in the Demonstrators pushed the gate onto the horse as the horse & rider were going through it. That's the irresponsible part. I admit the Rider was a bit precocious & shouldn't have done the ride. It was ten times worse for the demonstrator to shut the gate on the horse.
