Regarding the Bible and the Qur’an, I would agree that a viable path to reformation of Islam appears to be far more difficult and would require more mental gymnastics than simply pretending that Jesus came to chuck out the Old Testament when it’s inconvenient and contradicts the sometimes-contradictory teachings of Jesus.

That’s a good question. I would recommend ‘Islam and the Future of Tolerance: A Dialogue’ with Sam Harris and Majid Nawaz, where they discuss precisely this, if you’re interested. Preferably the audiobook, where they go into further discussion based on questions which readers had after the publication of the book.
