<<the political system is the best system we have, and it's deeply flawed by it's very nature. Mankind is not smart enough to come up with anything better.>>
Nhoj, I'll agree with that. Is there something better, I don't know, as you say, we are not smart enough to come up with anything better, if at all there is something better.
In Aussie, 99% of us are not directly involved in the political process to the extent that we are part of the decision making, we are very much on the outside looking in, if we are looking at all. We very much rely on our elected representatives to make the decisions for us, and in a complex society that is probably the best that can be achieved. The process is very much adversarial where the like minded (we call them political parties) congregate together and the one with the "majority" is given over as the decision making group, call them the government, with the rest forming what we call the opposition, with the objective of keeping the decision makers to account, and to offer some alternative advice. There are so many complexities, for example not every member of the government or opposition is of equal standing, and our representatives do not act in isolation, so many outside influences from the non elected.
Because of all this complexity the system is very open to abuse from within and without, and it is so hard to uncover. It would be naive to believe all past corruption has been uncovered, I'm sure politicians and others have got away Scot free time and again, when it comes to corruption and they will continue to get away with it in the future, but some will get exposed. Maybe they are only the real dumbos who get caught.
It is also naive to think good government is achieved by simply having the people march off once every 3 or 4 years, down to the local school hall, for half an hour, and cast a vote for one politician or another.

please paul..you must know..you can fall out of favour

<<..It is also naive to think good government is achieved by simply having the people march off once every 3 or 4 years, down to the local school hall, for half an hour, and cast a vote for one politician or another.>>

YES..AND WE CAN FIX IT..only by 'decentralisation'
acting locally not globally..no big fish..in world wide ponds
but big fish in small ponds there to serve and protect/on caLL 24/7[LOCALLY]..FOLLOWING THE COMMON WEALTH GUIDEBOOK..as trustee over estates..not as gifts or 99 year leases...to mates.

HE/she..[member][proper atourney general]..under hrh.. CHAIRS THE CHAIR AS MAJOR..aND by commitie we chose who best to represent us federaly in what areas..ACORDING as we rewrite the ruLes by which we are governed..

DECENTRALISE ALL GOVT INTO SCHOOLS/WHERE SCHOOL BOUNDRY ENDS
so does the govts powers to act/police is run federaly/under the old marshal plan...[maybe the self same elected ag].

i saw a vision that govt was run..by concensus..betWEEN THE WOMANS HOUSE[SENET/AND THE MENS HOUSE THE REPS...EACH SENT BY THE SCHOOL MEETING/vote..held same time ,uch like party meetings of old/..but for the school/governance/doing the council stuff/shgaring expertize and obligations and machinery resources like the old vvillage system

suburbs divided into small 'town' size areas.own services fire hospice jails..decentralise get rid of too big to fail globally*

Hey people, get ready for 3 more posts in a row from "One Under No God", full of ummmm, ahhhh, let's see now .... gee I don't think a words been invented for that yet.

Hmm, I wonder if he'll now not write his usual several replies of ummm... whatever, because I wrote this? One can only hope, as nobody actually reads his post thingies anyway.

Paul,

BoF made an emphatic false statement to ICAC and had to resign for accepting a bottle of wine. Given that this was not illegal, it was an act of stupidity.

It is interesting that liberals resign for a bottle of wine, but Juliar stays in power for setting up a fraudulent slush fund, and protecting the blatantly crooked Thomson.

The other ministers have to resign if they have broken the law.

However, the whole issue around "illegal" donations hinges around the Labor party seeing that it is about to lose power, suddenly bringing in laws to cut off the liberals off from funds that they had used for nearly 2 decades.
