When people express a fear it should be addressed. Not ignored.

I have noticed that when people express their concerns about Islam in this country, our Islamic communities seem to go mute. Unfortunately, when a serious matter hits the headlines, their silence is deafening. This does not help.

Many non-Muslims will talk about fairness and the good aspects of Muslims in an attempt to allay fears. But this is not enough, indeed often impotent.

Islamic communities must be engaged with wider society and, hopefully, speak out loudly and critically against Islamic attitudes and incidents that engender fear. Until this happens, those who see profound problems with Islam in Australia, will continue to do so. Indeed, in many ways they are justified.
