out of their depth. Clearly they don't have a clue about the real
ramifications of their actions, if they shut down the live trade.
I've seen the other side. I've seen what happens when there is a
drought and livestock need to be moved in hurry, before the land
is bare and blowing. Those live ships play a critical role in all
that. I've also seen it when they are not operating and farmers
have to dig holes and shoot their stock.
Contrary to what many claim, the live trade has actually come a
long way. What started with poor conditions and crappy boats,
today they are floating feedlots, where animals gain weight along
the way. In Bahrain in some of the sheep feedlots, the sheep
actually have chilled water to drink, something that Australian
sheep can only dream of. Some of the new ships are purpose built,
with the best of everything.
Now is the time to be pro active. So introduce stunning where
required. Not create a whole set of new problems which those
calling for the close of the trade, have even thought of.
