No *We are Unique,* whilst I do not dispute that there are families and carers in Oz who have quite the "extended families" the quantum and the scale is altogether different.
With out going into excess details which would be to initiate a new thread, I would cite as an example to evidence this that when I look from one end of the very long street in the abode of my wife's family to the other end, the what and who of what I see are pretty much entirely comprised of the family and extended family (including very close friends) and there are lots more further out, who by walkabout, word of mouth, sms and mobile phone keep integrally involved in one anothers affairs on an ongoing and continual basis, far more so than what is "generally" practiced here.
There is of course the huge difference in population, the size and proximity/design of their dwellings, religious and cultural practice etc, etc
