Your folk hero Il Duce was indeed a socialist early on, in his 20's he was the editor of Italy's leading socialist newspaper 'Avanti' but later Mussolini morphed into becoming an extreme Nationalist, as a result of Italy's failure caused by WWI, he formed the Italian Fascist Party in 1921. If you didn't like his socialist bent, maybe you preferred Mussolini's extreme Fascism, which is always associated with extreme nationalism. Like your man Trump with his calls of; "Make America great again!" Both Mussolini and Hitler had the same slogan with their respective countries in place of America.
