There are definitely double standards by people claiming to be anti racists. Take Israel for example. The usual anti semites here on OLO never stop attacking Israel while studiously ignoring Arab Muslim countries who's governments are a lot worse.

Israel gets hammered for discriminating against Arabs, while in Arab countries the Jews have been ethnically cleansed and the Muslims are working on the Christians. The Israelis get hammered for making Christians feel unwelcome, while in Arab and Muslim countries they mass murder Christians, burn their churches, kill priests and archbishops, and do everything they can to make Christians feel unsafe. And all we get is a deafening silence from the trendy left on that subject.

But the biggest double standard is how the attitudes of the trendy left have morphed over Israel. Trendies can only see the world in terms of oppressors and victims. And in the 50's. 60's and 70's, there was no doubt whatsoever as to whom the oppressors and victims were. The Arab countries never tired of telling everyon how they were going to exterminate Israel and scatter the Jews, and everybody thought that they were going to do just that. After all, how could tiny Israel with 2 million people prevail against the Arab countries with 500 million people who were lavishly supplied with Soviet weaponry?

But the Jews did something which trendies don't understand. Against all the odds, they kept winning. Now trendies automatically think that winners are oppressors and losers are victims. They can't help it. They can not think any other way. So, much to the amazement of people like myself, they en masse changed sides.

It was then I began to realise that there is something about trendies which compels them to overlook self evident reality and to always follow the party line. My theory is, that they have a compulsive psychological need to think that they are members of a superior class who are smarter and better than everybody else. And this compels them to always take the contrary view from the mainstream, as a form of class identification.

Agreed, with a significant exception. I no longer identify with the Left, particularly in regard to "anti-racism' and multiculturalism, there seems to be a patronising attitude in the manner in which the Left rationalises criminal behaviour by minorities--the "anti-racists" are probably latent racists themselves. It's difficult to believe the reports from Sweden where cultural relativism and "Western guilt" appear to be almost pathological amongst the political elite--will it occur here?

I doubt very much whether the Old Left would have embraced Multiculturalism in the manner of the New Left.

The exception is Israel. Despite Singer's outrageous claims, not all critics of Israel ignore Islamic oppression, want to see the country destroyed or are anti-Semitic, they just recognise an oppressive racist regime when they see one, I'd advise you to check Daffy's reference above. It's also really irritating to listen to the "eternal victim" whine, people who have been subjected to vicious oppression for millennia are not automatically precluded from dishing it out when they get the chance. I learned this long ago when working with immigrants from the Balkans, they, justifiably, protested against the prejudices and racism of mainstream Anglo-Celtic society, but many seemed quite oblivious to the racism against minorities in their homelands, that was natural as it was justified by the practise of religious and ethnic bigotry for many centuries.

I can understand David Singer's distress and anger at the recent anti-Semitic attacks on Jews in Sydney, the objection is to his attempts to incorporate it in his Zionist propaganda narrative.
