There are definitely double standards by people claiming to be anti racists. Take Israel for example. The usual anti semites here on OLO never stop attacking Israel while studiously ignoring Arab Muslim countries who's governments are a lot worse.

Israel gets hammered for discriminating against Arabs, while in Arab countries the Jews have been ethnically cleansed and the Muslims are working on the Christians. The Israelis get hammered for making Christians feel unwelcome, while in Arab and Muslim countries they mass murder Christians, burn their churches, kill priests and archbishops, and do everything they can to make Christians feel unsafe. And all we get is a deafening silence from the trendy left on that subject.

But the biggest double standard is how the attitudes of the trendy left have morphed over Israel. Trendies can only see the world in terms of oppressors and victims. And in the 50's. 60's and 70's, there was no doubt whatsoever as to whom the oppressors and victims were. The Arab countries never tired of telling everyon how they were going to exterminate Israel and scatter the Jews, and everybody thought that they were going to do just that. After all, how could tiny Israel with 2 million people prevail against the Arab countries with 500 million people who were lavishly supplied with Soviet weaponry?

But the Jews did something which trendies don't understand. Against all the odds, they kept winning. Now trendies automatically think that winners are oppressors and losers are victims. Agreed, with a significant exception. I no longer identify with the Left, particularly in regard to "anti-racism' and multiculturalism, there seems to be a patronising attitude in the manner in which the Left rationalises criminal behaviour by minorities--the "anti-racists" are probably latent racists themselves. It's difficult to believe the reports from Sweden where cultural relativism and "Western guilt" appear to be almost pathological amongst the political elite--will it occur here?

I doubt very much whether the Old Left would have embraced Multiculturalism in the manner of the New Left.

The exception is Israel. Despite Singer's outrageous claims, not all critics of Israel ignore Islamic oppression, want to see the country destroyed or are anti-Semitic, they just recognise an oppressive racist regime when they see one, I'd advise you to check Daffy's reference above. I learned this long ago when working with immigrants from the Balkans, they, justifiably, protested against the prejudices and racism of mainstream Anglo-Celtic society, but many seemed quite oblivious to the racism against minorities in their homelands, that was natural as it was justified by the practise of religious and ethnic bigotry for many centuries.

I can understand David Singer's distress and anger at the recent anti-Semitic attacks on Jews in Sydney, the objection is to his attempts to incorporate it in his Zionist propaganda narrative.

All I am suggesting is that people (including you) be required to have their real names and general area where they reside published with their comment - and to supply a phone number to the web editor who can verify the name and address of the person making the comment - if the editor decides that is necessary.

Someone has to make a stand somewhere and I don't underestimate the task involved in getting web editors to impose these conditions if one wants to have his comment published.

In my estimation we have long passed the point where people would do that voluntarily as the right and proper way to conduct themselves.

We all detest politicians who defame and denigrate people in Parliament - "the cowards castle" - but won't repeat those allegations outside.

Anonymous comments on the internet are similar and should not be published if the person is not prepared to come out of his cowards castle and put his name alongside his comment.

My point was that anti-Zionists can indeed be anti-Semitic, in its narrow sense of being anti-Jewish. I'm not particularly pro-Zionist, but I can sympathise with the insuperable burden forced on Jews, from England in the 1200s to Venice in the 1600s, across to Uzbekistan (e.g. Irving Berlin) in the 1900s and all places in between in the meantime. One part of me says that no, it wasn't right to force Palestinians out of their homes and lands, that the problems of Jews in Europe should have been solved in Europe. But another part considers the immense power of discriminatory governments, and remembers those pogroms and the many millions obliterated in the Nazi death camps, and the callous turning away of so many other European and other countries, including Australia.

My step-grandfather, of fond memory, was a Hungarian Jew who had to flee after the defeat of the Hungarian Revolution of 1919, who taught maths for many years at the Ultimo Tech, and who was interned as an enemy alien during the War, being inadvertently still a citizen of fascist Hungary. He lost all his relations except a brother fighting with Tito's guerillas, his mother who he had managed to bring out here, and a cousin in Rumania. All the others, gone. He wasn't very observant, he used to get quite merry on Friday nights, and I don't think he cared much about Israel: he was okay, he was here, after all.

Life and powerlessness throw up many dilemmas for many people. What might have been the alternative for Jewish people after the Tsaristpogroms and the Naziexterminations ? To what, stand and fight ? To 'overthrow oppression' ? (That's sounds so easy on paper.) Or to try to return to the refuge of a long-remembered homeland ? Right or wrong, they didn't have too many options. Buy up land back in Palestine ? Okay. Defend what they had and drive invading Arab armies out ? Okay, mindful of the possible consequences.

Why did that atrocity occur? What I find most fascinating about this issue is that, it is not the far-right nationalists doing most of the slandering, as was the case previously, it is actually the "progressive" left. I will also add that Western civilisation receives criticism everyday. It is deeply embedded in university criteria. I don't think censoring "progressives" is the answer, though. They simply need to be countered. Hardly any of their arguments stand up to rational scrutiny. All that is needed is that conservatives, capitalists, and liberals counter them at every opportunity.

The only outwardly non racist states are the European ones who have embraced multiculturalism, and it's associated social self suicide. Trendies always support causes and prior to WW1 they were the biggest patriots, racists and nationalists around. I, and other critics of Israel on this site, have expressed our opposition to Islamic ideology and the threat it presents to liberal democracy. Liberal democracies can only exist if the people who populate them believe in liberal democracy, and they possess attitudes, values and behaviours consistent with living in a liberal democracy. We in the western world are importing people who do not believe in western democracy and who's behaviour is appalling. There are two outcomes to this policy.

1. Liberal democracies will become less liberal and less democratic to reflect the values of the people we are importing, with the eventual destruction of the liberal democracies.

2. Liberal democracies will get less liberal and less democratic when the people who believe in these principles realise that they had better fight to keep what is left. Like the Israelis, they will become more racist, more intolerant, and openly hostile to the people who are hostile to them (and who's medieval lifestyle they are supporting.) This is the position which Europe is in right now. Far right parties are on the rise as young people look ahead and see only dhimmitude, and a poverty stricken Muslim Europe with no liberal democracies. Given the choice, I think that most Euros would prefer a far right government with much less freedom, than a Muslim government with no freedom at all.

It is funny how the finger wagging, oh so morally pure Euros have come to this. But that is what happens when you put high minded principles ahead of self preservation. What I am saying is that in all wars, people get treated terribly. Again and again it happens. Later on, we usually have the stories told by the winning side. These will always always be biased. Certainly what the germans did was terrible. However, there are endless programs on the events of WW2, which are painted in a simple black and white nature. What one side did was absolutely disgraceful and the other side was totally innocent. I have a friend who's parent was in a concentration camp. They were not Jewish but as you know there were many other groups in these camps besides the Jews, often ignored in many comments. My friends sisters were killed by the Germans. Her parent has no respect for what the Germans did during the war, however she also has the same amount of distain for how the Jews treated many others around them. She saw many others die around her because the Jews would not help them. Because of how she saw the Jews acting during these times, she will never trust a Jewish person since. Basically I am saying what the Germans did was terrible, but what many other groups did was also terrible.
Now today, because of political correctness, people of Jewish descent appear to be treated unequally. If there is any legitimate criticism of the Israeli state or Jews, they will often scream discrimination in an attempt to squash genuine discussion.

It's no wonder that the Jewish community is so sensitive to criticism when people like Ozzie feel they can say what he has just said. I've tossed-up whether to delete it or not, and have decided to leave it there. One shouldn't put much store in hearsay. Anybody who gives out a blanket opinion on an entire group of people is, by definition, discriminating against that group. And it is very common for many people from Eastern Europe to have quite anti-Semitic views - not all or perhaps even most, but anti-Semitism has a long history in that part of the world. After all, Zionism had its roots there as a reaction to violence and hatred.

It couldn't have been easy being Jewish in the Pale of the Russian empire - one couldn't own land, one was barred from many professions, from universities, and from Christian hospitals. “This study, which is fully funded by the Kameda Medical Center in Japan, may pave the road for IceCure to use its cryoablation technology in lung cancer tumors, in addition to the current commercial applications for the treatment of benign breast tumors and investigational use for small breast cancers,” said IceCure President and CEO Hezi Himelfarb.

IceCure has received FDA approval for its cryoablation system, IceSense3, to treat fibroadenomas and small malignant breast tumors. The procedure is minimally invasive, takes approximately 15 minutes and requires only local anaesthetic.

IceSense3 uses ultrasound imaging to guide a hollow needle into the lump or tumor. The distal part of the needle is then cooled to -274F (-170C) through the use of liquid nitrogen, which engulfs the tumor in a ball of ice and destroys the targeted cells. I wouldn't have interpreted Singer's equation that way: many Jewish people, especially on the Left, have been anti-Zionist - while there have been Leftist groups which explicitly support Zionism, the kibbutz movement for example. And as was noted somewhere above, not all Zionists are particularly observant. In fact, many extreme Orthodox Jewish sects have also been steadfastly anti-Zionist.

Perhaps one could also suggest that many Jewish people are so by virtue of their family and social relations, by their common history of exclusion - without being particularly Zionist OR observant.

So, in that sense, there are three broad definitions, often overlapping, of being Jewish -

- political: Zionist (Right and Left),

- religious: observant,

- and social-cultural: people who happen to have a common history of being Jewish rather than Christian or something else, feel comfortable with people with a similar background and history, but just want to get on with their lives.

It's just as wrong, as simplistic, to equate Zionism with Judaism as it is to equate being Jewish with being Zionist. There are, I suspect, a multitude of positions, as there are within any religious group, particularly one which has actually been scattered across the world for a couple of thousand years.

I worked with an Orthodox Jew who visited Israel soon after the Six Day war, he returned with rather racist attitudes in regard to Arabs in general and the Palestinians in particular. I couldn't help wondering whether that was a widespread attitude amongst Israeli Jews.

My take on the whole sorry business of Palestine is that there has to be movement towards a single, democratic, secular state,sooner or later, perhaps in a century, in which nobody gets pushed either out into the desert or into the sea.

And that there are far, far more important issues, even in the Middle East - Syria, for example, and the ever-looming confrontation between Sunni extremists (the Saudis and the various al-Qa'ida-affiliated groups), and Shia Islam, a potential war between, say, a hundred million people on each side.

On that score, I suspect that Obama is playing a very careful game to calm that conflict down, ostensibly over Syria and Iran's nuclear program, but ultimately to neutralise the Saudis. Frankly, all of that makes any issues with Palestine rather small beer.

While we're off-topic, I suspect that the whole US-Iran wheeler-dealer thing is vastly more complicated, with all manner of back-room negotiations going on between the US and Iran and Israel and Syria, with Netanyahu playing bad-guy to Obama's good-guy for the audience, but many different scenarios and agendas being worked on.

Ask yourself: if Iran had the bomb, how son before the Saudis had one (if they don't have one already) ? And if you were Iran, how would you feel with Pakistan, the Saudis AND Israel having their bombs aimed at you ? So, they surely know they could never win if any nuclear-type conflict broke out ? That they are forever THERE, in between all three adversaries, so their best option is some sort of uneasy co-existence.

And surely Israel has common interests with Iran in Syria, grotesque as it may sound ? That their common enemy, and the Left's new friend, is the claque of al-Qa'ida-affiliated groups who seem perfectly content with turning the whole of Syria into rubble, in anticipation of a new Paradise on Earth ? Come to think of it, a similar agenda to that of the extreme Left ?

Maybe what might come out of all of these conflicts is either

a) sweetness and light for all OR

b) a modus vivendi between Israel and Iran, in mutual and temporary support of Bashar al-Assad, on the basis of their mutual loathing of al-Qa'ida (and by extension the Saudis), backed up by the US, OR

c) more unlikely but preferable, a strengthening of the liberal/democratic/secular forces in Syria, with the option of coming to terms, for a time at least, with Assad, and effectively, the US, Iran, Israel, Assad and the secular/democratic forces forming a coalition against the al-Qa'ida-oriented forces in Syria, to the disgruntlement of Saudi Arabia.

If only the Saudis could be effectively gruntled, the last option may work. Then the fun can begin.

No Palestinian groups have claimed responsibility. "Luckily" for Israel, this is all happening during Christmas, when the west is distracted by religious celebrations and not paying attention to Israel's wholly out-of-proportionate "response" to what looks like a classic false-flag operation to justify military strikes into Gaza.

Stop and think. Palestine is winning the public relations battle with Israel. The boycott movement is growing rapidly. The UN has recognized Palestine as a state, and the whole world condemns Israel's starvation blockade of Gaza as a crime against humanity. Palestine is not going to risk alienating world opinion with a single random shooting of a Bedouin. Such a shooting gains them nothing militarily or politically.

Israel, on the other hand, stands to gain a great deal by killing that Bedouin worker and blaming Palestine, even though the sniper got away and remains unidentified, to demonize Palestine in the eyes of the world and justify (at last count) 18 strikes into Gaza.
