A group in Tasmania wanting to hear a talk by Ian Plimer thought that Hobart's Shambles Brewery pub would be a good venue. But, no. The manager disagreed, saying there was "no way" he would allow a "thoroughly debunked propagandist" like Professor Plimer to use his establishment to "spout his unscientific rhetoric".

No 'pub tests' available at the Shambles unless mine host agrees with what might be said.

ttbn,

I did read about this in Quadrant.

I'm not sure if legally the owner of the pub
can do this. Yes, it is his pub, but he also
has a licence to provide a service to the
public. And I would have thought that if
people are not breaking any laws or creating
a disturbance - the owner has no right to
not allow them into his pub. He can't
discriminate, I would have thought.

But perhaps I'm wrong.

I'll have to look into the matter.

Foxy,

I imagine another venue will be found, if it hasn't been already. Woke businesses these days don't seem to realise that income is income, no matter what beliefs the customers have. My family had a retail business, and everbody's money was good no matter who they were or what they thought. One of the things some people in business these days don't realise is that you keep your politics and opinions to yourself - if you want to stay in business. The manager of the Shambles was a school teacher, not the best background for business. There will be consequences to his refusal, whether or not he was within his legal rights - particularly in a place the size of Hobart.

ttbn,

I looked up the pubon the web.

It apparently is a very successful and popular pub in
Hobart. Rave reviews given on "Tripadvisor."
That's probably why it was chosen for the lecture.

Was Plimer simply looking for a free venue? I wanted to run a farting competition in the dining room of the same pub on Friday night. The publican band it on the grounds it wasn't good for business. BUT he has agreed that the finals of the Up-Chuck competition can go ahead next Saturday. Vomit Boy will be defending his title from Spueman Sam, should be a technicolour nightmare!
