That has been one of Germany's problems Bazz. Much of their wind power is far remover from the Ruhr Valley where it is needed. They have been using parts of other countries grids to get it to their industry, & those countries are jacking up.
Transmission lines are expensive to build, & even more expensive in resources, particularly steel & copper. Even Germany can't economically justify the expenditure involved, just as we can't afford the inter connectors keeping the failed state, SA alive.
Wind has a few major problems, other than it's expense & intermittency.
It has to be cited where wind is as reliable as possible, it causes major problems if too close to any habitation, & combined this means it mostly has to be cited far from the major demand for the power. Add to this the fact that it has to have reliable back up in the form of dispatchable power generation to support it when not available.
Even Turnbull's white elephant of Snowy 2.0 will not have the capacity to take the load for a regularly wind drought in cloudy periods.
While nuclear could replace fossil fuels for power generation, it is unlikely to gain acceptance any time soon. I'm sure a reliable & acceptable generation system will be found, but it is not possible before 2050. We are going to be using fossil fuels for a long time still, even without the sensible voice of Barnaby
