Yonks ago, I was very interested in Psychiatry, and recall (perhaps unreliably) that narcissists and psychotics (and there didn't seem to be much difference between them) were horrified by being near clearly-disabled people, as if it would rub off. They thought such people were losers, to be exterminated if possible, certainly shut away, out of sight.
