Yes Is Mise that farmers wife should have access to anything she wanted for her protection, as of course should the elderly. The fact that what ever they choose may not help them is not as important as the peace of mind in feeling safe & less scared.

A pressure can of Start Ya Bastard, nothing but ether & white spirits, will not only help start an old reluctant motor, but render an intruder hard of vision for some time.

I actually picked up a new dog today. An 8 month old Great Dane, who's owners were frightened would hurt their 2 year old. Danes are clumsy & not suitable with little children. They are in no way guard dogs, more likely to lick than bite, but their size & deep bark is a real deterrent. When I had a couple in Sydney, even friends who knew them, would not come into the yard or house, if we were not there to welcome them in.
