"...there's no justification for automatic assault rifles etc"

There never has been, automatic weapons have been banned since, at least, the 1930s.

invent bad childhoods and upbringing
Belly,
I'm glad you brought this up because I have actually experienced that too. The problem is that the wide-eyed, open-mouthed academic do-gooder types started believing all this story telling & acted on what they heard instead of what they saw !
One bloke tore into me that "my people are suffering" because the water was off for a couple of hours during repairs to the line.

Are you sure about that date Is Mise? I had a browning 22 in the mid 50s which I recall as an automatic. I'm not totally sure, it may have been a repeater, but my memory is auto. Dad was not the sort of bloke to give me an illegal gun.

What a different world today. Before I did my first foreign cruise I bought a cheap Winchester 22, an air rifle & a shotgun at the nearest Big W department store. Good guns don't stay good for long in the salt atmosphere of a yacht.

The 22 was great for harvesting bunches of coconuts. 3 or 4 shots through the stem of a bunch would bring it down. A lot easier & safer than climbing those 70 Ft tall palms in the islands.

I used the same technique to kill the flower pods of the cocos palms some fool planted in the house paddock before I bought the place. Just a couple of shots through the stem kills the thing so the horrible nuts don't develop. If you let them grow you have flying fox for weeks each night after the nuts.

Too many new homes with in a few hundred metres today, to be safe shooting up in the air, so had to drop the things. A really big effort with them too close to the house for comfort.

Yes we need rifles to protect our stock. Stupid council regulations require we keep our dogs locked up, so the rifle is the only way.

Far from the subject but true, this morning read a feature story on ABC online news
About that murdering thing who ran down innocent folk on a Melbourne footpath
His history is full of criminal offenses, too he was questioned by police, many times in that last week, even day before
A Police officer near begged he be watched, it never happened
IF we are to address the problem we must first fix our justice system
Courts empower these crimes
Indy yes such people exist and too often courts fall for it

Belly,
it is because of the poorly run Court system that such mentality flourishes. People in high positions aren't trained in thinking , they're merely trained to be seen as thinking.
That's why they invented meaningless jargon.
