Most of us will have to use Public Toilets at some stage and I'm sure that all OLOs wash their hands before leaving the facilities.
Not everyone is as fastidious as us and the door handle that one has to grasp to get out of most Public Toilets may well be contaminated by unwashed hands.

Why are the doors on such places nearly always inwards opening so that one must pull them to get out?

This is really tough, the Government should so something so that any user will not have to dirty their handkerchief so as not to get their hands dirty. On the other hand we could demand the Government provides handkerchiefs. Or the Government could provide ......

Shopping centres do have badly designed toilets and the way doors operate is just one issue. A better design is one that does not require doors and the user negotiates a short Maze at the entrance.

It seems the developers get away with just the bare minimum to pass regulations and often locate toilets in the most out of way positions.

Not long ago I was in a large Target store that was not in a shopping centre but had a street frontage. Staff informed me there was not toilets for customers and the closest was a KFC almost a block away. I will not go back to that shop.

With all the doors and shopping trolleys and ATMs that one handles, it is not unreasonable to expect convenient hand washing facilities, before dining in the 'food court'.

Little wonder that people pick up and pass on bugs so easily.

Seems that on OLO we may have a few closet non-hand washers.

Or, if you are concerned about germs (which I'm not) you can for a few dollars buy some antiseptic wipes so you can wipe your hands once you get back to your car, or go on your way.

This way, for one persons very small outlay, we can direct our taxes to what most of us would consider to be far more important priorities.

Secondly, it is a bit concerning that you, a former butcher, say you are not concerned about germs. For a food handler, you should be very concerned about hygiene. I would expect that you have spent a lot of time insisting that your staff washed hands often and that you expected the shops to be sparkling cleaned at the end of the day.

Or was that only to satisfy the heath regulators? I hope it was not 'out of sight, out of mind'. There are too many dirty food places.

The toilets at shopping centres are the most used public toilets these days, as are the ones at service stations. They are built for use by the public. i.e. customers. The centre management pays for cleaning, etc. which is part of shop rental fees. The better the toilet facilities, the more customers that centre will attract.

The point Is Mse was making is that many toilets are poorly designed and could be improved for better hygiene.

I am an old bushy and not overly fastidious, but I do know people do carry and distribute bacteria like e coli. The more people, the more germs are spread.

The more people you have the more deceases will surface. Hygiene is important that goes without saying but there are those who live super hygienic & they're the ones that get sick easily & cost the rest of us a lot. travellers are the main culprits. Travellers decease carrying tax anyone ?
There's no real answer to that particular problem. Accept that & do your best to keep away from public toilets. I mean we all know what types frequent them most.

I do think some people go overboard and, they can be quite over reacting. One example being when I upset a guy who said to me one day, "I purchased a ham and salad roll from the servo today, and the lady who made it didnt even wash her hands first". Of cause I said, that was terrible, so tell me, did you wash your hands before you ate it, he said no, then I said, do you think that lady might have pumped fuel, touching the hadle that hundreds a day touch, before she made your roll. He said, you're just a smart arse.

Finally, most shopping centre toilets are very clean, and they are usually cleaned on a very regular basis. They also are less likely to have peop,e with dirty hands entering them.

So as I say, if you are concerned, the best solution is to take your own bacterial wipes.

I have seen on a number of occasions workers (men) in Shopping Center use the toilets, leave without washing there hands (in male public toilets about 50% don't wash their hands). These workers have often been seen back at the job preparing and selling food, serving etc.
Small business are literally killing their customers through dirty practices, this is very common. Butch I'm not having a go at you, I did once report a local butcher which I observed smoking while he chopped meat on the block very early one morning.

I have gone to the 'mens' and washed my hands before eating in a shopping centre food court and I too have wondered what is the point when I have to pull a door open to exit, using a handle that a hundred before me have also used to open the door. I would probably be better to wipe my hands on the seat of my pants.

I see medicos are now saying that the best way to combat resistant bugs in hospitals is to insist on frequent hand washing by staff.

As I said before, there are dozens of things we touch that most likely carry bugs. If we educate about hand washing there is not much point if one has to pull on a dirty door handle afterward.

In my 23 years of owning shops I never allowed smoking in my shops, although it was very common with in the industry. Still is, albeit to a lesser degree.

Once the unfair dismissal laws took hold, poor hygiene was not a sackable offense. Although I did sack a guy once for spitting in my shop and nothing came of it.

When smoking became socially unacceptable, my staff who smoked, (the majority) had two rules, one, they had to remove thier company uniform to smoke, and two, if I could smell smoke on them when they returned they were not allowed to start work as the customer could smell it as well. Lost a few staff over it, I was probably breaking the UFD laws as well.

As for the name and shame, as usual, authorities and the media ignore those who do the right thing. I said many times, even wrote to the likes of ACA and said, while I accept you can't name the bad traders, the least you could do is name the ones you tested that were doing the right thing.

I have always thought that naming this who do the right thing was just as important than the opp. In fact, don't restaurants now have a start rating, based on over all hygiene.

Perhaps this must have been made law, because no shopping centre will forgo one square inch of retail space they are not forced to by legislation.

As for modern day kids, when I was a little kid, in the 60's, there were no such thing as being allergic to peanuts, yet peanut butter is now banned from schools.

Butch your attitude towards staff smoking is highly commendable, and more employers should take that kind of stance. Things that are easy yet seemed to be ignored are the simple use of gloves, cross contamination, where dirty knives, boards etc are used without regular washing. The over display of prepared hot food, what happened to the 2 hour rule, display if for 2 hours and then remove it. I'll give it to W&C, they do display cooked chooks only 2 hours, with the time on them, but both my local W&C are bad in the deli dept with dirty meat slicers, and sliced cold meat, I wont buy it, sometimes looks like its been there all day.

Naturally, Raj asked what did we think, my partner who is a bit forthright said "The restaurant is PATU! (Patu the Maori word for DIRTY) Raj not understanding Maori, "patu, what is patu" Quick as a flash I chimed in with "well Raj there's not an English word for patu, but wonderful, beautiful will be close enough." On Monday, I had my review colonoscopy
and I can assure everyone that toilet
door-knobs was the last thing on my mind.
I was simply grateful for whatever public
toilets were available. And yes, I did (and

Glad to see that maybe shopping centre builders are starting to incorporate better designs.

I am well aware that the developers of these centre want to maximise the space they can rent out to retailers. However they need some education to provide facilities that attract customers. Funny thing, they spend heaps on entertainment for kids, but only spend the bare minimum on toilet facilities. They also seem to make parking space so small you need a motor bike.

Things I look for in a shopping centre are:- Ease of vehicle entry/exit and reasonable parking spaces. Good toilet facilities that are clean. Trollies that go it the direction that I determine. Some centres provide shade over the parking area which is an attraction. Noisy food court areas are a turn off, some sound muffling is required. We prefer a separate cafe or take food to a park.

These things should be seen as a benefit to attract people rather than a cost to the developer. No doubt they pay architects big fees for design and planning, it can be improved

Let us assume that we are about to sup at one of the town's more salubrious eateries, McDonald's.

Before commencing to consume the magnificent repast one may need to visit the toilet and all unsuspecting one grasps the possibly fecal matter contaminated door handle on the way out; as the majority of the food will be conveyed to the mouth by hand, one might wonder just what else is consumed.

whatever else you choose. I think your concerns

Don't mind at all, it's a dish that I like.

Haven't been to Sydney lately so don't know what the toilet trends are in the big smoke.
However in Armidale, NSW, McDcnald's has an inward opening door, ditto Grafton, Casino, Coff's Harbour and Warwick, Qld.
The local doctors' recently built building has an inward opening door on the unisex toilet. I would say that such doors are the norm, visit the Law Courts' 24 storey building in Macquarrie St and you'll find that all of the toilets have the offending doors.
The reason there is simple, the toilet air-conditioning is by pressure and outward opening doors would not stay shut.
Health is very much a secondary consideration.

As for me or anyone else carrying wipes; if the owners of the buildings fulfilled their duty of care then the matter would not arise.
Hungry Jack's in Warwick has the washing facilities outside the toilets' exit doors.
Simple.

Is Miis, you will find that most modern shopping centre rest rooms are now doorless. Perhaps theynhave listens to people like you before, but I do think expecting them to refit their existing stores/facilities is a bit rich.

As for doors opening out, it has a lot to do with being able to gain access should a person inside the cubicle have a heart attack or collapse.

You will find all modern house toilet doors also open out, in fact, some both ways, for this ver reason.

Most cubicle doors still open inwards but it is the exit door from the facilities that need to open outwards.
Altering the direction of opening merely requires turning the hinges and moving the timber against which the door stops to the reverse position.
As there are but two doors usually involved I don't think that a job that should cost no more than $400 (and that's being generous)should be beyond the finances of most businesses/organizations that provide toilet facilities.
I had occasion today to visit Tenterfield Hospital, their Public Toilet is so small that there is only one cubicle (inward door) and the washing area is so small that one must stand with one foot against the inward opening exit door to avoid being struck in the butt by someone who wishes to enter.
There are however a lot of hand washing instructions!

Is Mis, $400 you say. You can't even get a traddie out of bed for that. Besides, most shopping degree these days require an induction before you start work and a minimum of $20 million public liability insurance.

I doubt you could get that job done these days for less than a grand. So I would suggest that a problem like yours is not even on their radar so as to speak.

They already carry the insurance and I'll turn most doors for $100 a door and even drop to $50 for independent service stations; it's a half hour job if the screws aren't rusted.

Thanks for your kind words.

I'm still recovering from an awful bout of
food poisoning. Jeepers creepers - it was worse
than my colonoscopy on Monday. To make a long story short -
hubbie and I went shopping for Mother's Day presents
on Thursday evening - and we ended up having dinner at a
local pub where "Beef and Reef," was on special.
I ordered that dish (hubbie had something else). It was
a large steak with three prawns on top and a sauce on top
of that, plus chips, and a garden salad, with another
sauce on top of that.

When we got home I felt a bit nauseaous - but everything
was allright - then on Friday more nausea - and around
Midday - severe diarrea developed followed by severe
vomiting. Luckily I had taken the day off - because I
wasn't feeling well. I spent most of the day in the toilet.
This went on all day and night - and Saturday I was still
being flushed - although the vomiting had stopped.

I ended up ringing the pub to let them know - and apparently
I wasn't the only one who had been ill. It seems that their
Chef had left earlier - and they had some inexperienced
youngsters doing the cooking. At least that's the excuse I
was given. I rather think that I was given some old food -
that's why it was on "special."

Needless to say - I had to cancel my dinner Party.
Even today, I've still got a few stomach
cramps. We were going to go out to eat for lunch on Mother's Day -
instead I offered them scones and tea.

We won't be going back to that pub anytime soon.

On Pubs: Sydney Uni did a study some years ago on bowls of "Beer Nuts" that some establishments used to provide gratis for all and sundry, as the night and the drinking progressed so did the level of contamination of the nuts, by human urine.

It could be said that the nuts were as pissed as some of the patrons.

Arrrr yes...the human immune system..) thanks to the clean people keeping their children from the environment, the disinfected junkies cant see for the life of them how important it is, in keeping a close association with nature.....( ever seen a sick greenie:).....up to their necks in it...that's why where very hard to kill:)....so thy rich and ignorant one's, keep up the good work...the more you drop off and pass over to the after life (what ever that means), the more room we have climb the ladder of success:)......Now! I wonder who's costing the health system...Makes one think doesn't it:)

You cannot become immune through unhygenic practices as you seem to think.

Many Australians have no idea either. As can be seen where mothers change their infants and go on to handle food without washing their hands. Similarly it is common to see people doing their laundry and then going off to handle the family's food preparation. Any idea how much faecal matter there is in 'clean' laundry? It is the sun's UV that eventually knocks out much of it.

Not so much poor hygiene, but not such good hygiene is sometimes an important health tool as it helps the human body's ability to fightoff infection. Evidence being in that whikemon we go to places like Bali and get what's commonly known as 'Bali belly' the locals don't suffer from this as their amune systems have developed to cope with the lowering of hygiene.

There is little doubt that the sterile environment many parents provide for their kids is the cause of so many allergies they suffer from. It's either that, or globalization, or perhaps a combination of both. But either way, when I was a tot, in the 60's, eating dirt was not uncommon and, if one kid got the mumps, all the mums would take their kids there so they too would get them. It was strengthening their amune systems.

These days, if a kid gets a common infection, like the mumps, they are alienated.

Paul, I note you have not responded to my simple question of would growing more organic food (commercially) add to the theory of climate change.
