Words as we all should know can do a great deal of harm -
especially to the most vulnerable in our society.
If you want to
stick the knife in without leaving a telling gash -
do it with words. The scar will be that much deeper.

Therefore if we removed all these protections - people
would risk having their lives disrupted, their
reputations besmirched, their businesses fail, and all
because of somebody's "right" to express whatever
wacky or ill-founded view them might hold.

Once someone is labelled - a wife beater, a sexual deviant,
an alcoholic, a child molester, a pervert,
a criminal, then there is the small
problem of "the more one doth protest," and this is assuming
that you've got the power (and resources) for your voice
to be heard.

It seems a bit fishy to me about focusing all our "free speech"
efforts on eradicating the rather weak protection that
currently exists for some of the most vulnerable people in
our society and leaving the rich and powerful fully protected.

If expressing our conscience is so important in a free society
why is it only the bigots who have this right?

All societies, including democratic ones, put various
limitations on what people may say, They prohibit certain
types of speech that they believe might harm the government or
the people. People who enjoy the rights of free speech have
a duty to respect other people's rights. A person's freedom
of speech is limited by the rights of others. We have laws
governing libel and slander, public decency, and urging
violence. Attorney Brandis should be looking at other
laws to repeal - not this one.
