Thank You for raising this issue and it is a concern.
My niece is a medical professional and apparently
where she lives in Port Macquarie - many mothers are
encouraged to not vaccinate their babies. I remember
seeing a program on television some time ago on the
subject - where one so called "medical Professional,"
older woman raved against vaccination and when asked
what her qualifications were replied, "I've read a lot
of books on the subject and know more than doctors!"

As one mother pointed out (who'd lost a baby due to
not having her baby vaccinated for whooping-cough) -
"I challenge any mother to watch the agony a baby
goes through when they can't breath."

We're luck in this country that vaccinations are available
for preventable diseases. This isn't the case around the
globe. And to not vaccinate your child - is irresponsible
of the parent - to say the least. Those parents that don't
vaccinate their children and then claim that, "See my children
didn't get sick." Are extremely lucky. And the reason that
their kids did not get sick is probably due to the fact
that everyone else's children were vaccinated.

The anti-vaccination movement people are driven by scientifically unfounded fears and untruths. I think most would have been part of the flat earth movement back in it"s day.

SteeleRedux, just because your dinner party friend was a health professional doesn't mean she/he couldn't also be a loony-toon!
Even the Government have moved to ensure this 'movement' does not have the word 'vaccination' in it's business name.

The fact that mass vaccinations have rid the world of smallpox, and almost rid it of polio is enough for me.

I have personally cared for kids with whooping cough, encephalitis caused from measles, and brain damage from German measles. If all these awful illnesses can be prevented for even one child then I am all for it.

That goes without saying. The next medical challenge will be to curb the poulation growth due to modern medicine.
I'm certain they will find a solution to that as soon as there's good money to be made.
