Last night at a dinner party I got into a discussion with a nurse and her husband about vaccinations. It was a real eye-opener. This person was stridently against them and quoted statistics on polio, small pox, measles, Austism and asthma to make her case.

I had heard fringe conversations around the subject but this was coming from a health professional. The source of the anti-vaccine movement seems to be one Dr Wakefield whose erroneous research linking Autism to triple vaccination shots has since been completely demolished. However it has let a climate of fears no being exploited by other shonks and it is having chilling consequences.

I fully concede that there are risks with injecting anything foreign into a body so when solely looking at the well being of a particular child, protected as they are in this country by the 'herd immunity' in place because other parents had chosen to vaccinate their own children, then it could be rationalised that not vaccinating was the least risky option. However there is a high degree of 'selfishness' in doing so.

Therefore I'm asking what people think. Is this movement driven mainly by discredited fears and therefore will die out or is the impetus a sign of a selfish society, unable to fully appreciate community action and thus destined to flourish.

I have no idea what others are driven by, but they shouldn't be moved by fears - they should be moved by certainties.

It is undisputed that under the existing circumstances which include 'herd immunity', vaccinating a child is harmful to that child. Some consider that harm small or even insignificant while others consider it big or even catastrophic.

In either case, one should not knowingly harm others, how less so their own child.

Socialism however, does not recognise that children belong to their parents - it believes that children belong to 'society', which is represented by the state. Socialism seeks to destroy the family, which it sees as part of the hated 'old order'. It seeks to set up parents against their children, children against their parents and wives against their husbands (and how 'outdated' even those impolitically-correct words are, one should now say 'partner' instead).

Nothing is wrong of course with contributing to society: people may for example unselfishly donate blood - but it must be their own blood!

Now should conditions change and herd-immunity decline, then parents may reconsider vaccinating their children based on the good of their children alone. Then, those parents who believe that the harm to their child by vaccination is less than the harm from exposure to the corresponding germ/virus, would be the first to vaccinate and those who believe otherwise never will - which is just the way it should be.

Given that Dr. Wakefield's claims were refuted, those who believe that we are a body, whose purpose is to survive, be physically healthy and procreate, are the ones likely to believe that vaccination is only minimally harmful.

OTOH, those who hold a spiritual perspective do not depend on medical research such as Wakefield's, be it true or false, but understand that our body is merely a vehicle for our soul, designed to give us the exact experience in the world that we need (rather than want), hence any wilful attempt to modify it is detrimental to our spiritual purpose for life.

Medicine is nothing short of fantastic now. Just as fantasic as the population explosion & medical waste polution due to modern medicine. It really is a no win situation in the long run. Solve one problem, creato two more. Sad but also fact. I only hope they're working on it.
