Substitute sixty seconds of silence during which members can quietly pray or reflect as their conscience (yes, I know it seems oxymoronic) dictates.

Personally, I would be satisfied if all politicians asked for forgiveness...

Some might even reflect that they have been elected to represent neither themselves nor their parties, but the people of their electorate.

Good start to the silly season.

Why would Jews and Muslims find the Lord's Pray(er) offensive?

Non-believers might find it a bit of a joke.

jodelie,

What has Catholicism got to do with it?

The Lord's Prayer was introduced into a Protestant dominated Parliament by Anglicans and supported by members of other religions; it has now become a harmless tradition.

Once more The Greens are leading the way, in this case its Senator Richard Di Natale advocating the removal of that silly little anachronism of reciting of a religious incantation before each days sitting. As Richard said "We have a very clear separation between church and state in this country." so why are we sticking to this bit of mumbo jumbo in parliament. I expect no support for Richards endeavors from the stuffy old conservative bible bashers on the government benches, or the Labor Catholic right fruit cakes on the oppositions side. If the parliament was to abandon this anachronism how would Tony convey the news to his boss and mentor Archy Pell?

Parliamentarians are being paid good money to run the country.
Payer is a waste of this precious time.
If anyone can demonstrate one (just one) prayer that has been answered by divine intervention then let them pray.
Until then it is a useless anachronistic exercise.
