First you appear to lament the tradition (was this sarcasm?), then you end by saying how much you love it!

Unfortunately, there are people in Australia and other Western countries who really do want to bury it.

Because, whatever it is and however it came about, it's *ours*.
It's Western, it's White, it's European.

And it's specifically Christian.

So you have two (often overlapping) groups quite serious about ridding our society of Christmas: The multiculturalists (who of course won't say a word against exotic/alien holy days and festivals) and the militant rationalists/atheists/secularists (who also won't say a word against non-Christian holy days and festivals, like the astrology-based Chinese New Year).

These grumps and traitors would love to see the end of Christmas.
But its use-by-date is probably "Never".

It has morphed in meaning and form before (Santa Claus wasn't invented by Coke, but the red suit was) and will do so again.
The Australian Christmas has quite sensibly lost all reference to winter and snow.

There will always be a need for celebration of love and kinship and, like it or not, in our society Christmas is what we've got.

Many thanks for your interesting comments and I'm very sorry if I've confused you with my jumbled style of writing ?

For the record, I love everything about Christmas ! Moreover, I'll not attempt to introduce any form of academic analysis as to the meaning or reasons that we in the western world, pursue the day in such a regular or an unvarying manner. As I mentioned in a previous piece. It's my belief that the 25th December, is the day set aside by Christians as the day Christ was born, thus it's the birthday of Jesus Christ.

Is it accurate, is it the true day and date Jesus was born, I don't know ? Nor care. To me it's merely symbolic, is all. It's the day we all seem to celebrate, with our family, friends even neighbours. A day set aside for love, friendship, happiness and gift giving. I've no interest whatsoever whether or not we're all mistaken. So what.

It can't be a bad thing, bringing us all together in peace and harmony, love, companionship, and celebration. A happy and joyous event and in my books, as one who's seen some pretty awful events in my life, committed by one person to another, it's far better than any alternative, believe me ?
