Christmas and all that it personifies, including that funny old image of Santa Claus, perpetuated by Coca Cola back in the 1920' or 30's. Is it not time for this myth to be finally consigned to the folklore of our bygone days ?

There are many of those who believe Christmas is more injurious than beneficial to us. They speculate it divides many people, families who are normally estranged from each other, the lonely feel more lonely purely because they're excluded from any family festivities. Unless one is a practising Christian, why celebrate the myth anyway ?

For myself, I'll always love Christmas, Santa, and everything else connected with this uniquely Christian celebration. And I'm an atheist. Despite many of our learned community leaders, Captains of Industry, politicians, academics and social engineers, all who say we should now discard this event, in order to inculcate a far greater social inclusion for everybody in our multicultural society ? I'd still ask why ?

Uniquely Christian? Not a chance, mate. The Bible does not record Christ's date of birth and all those people celebrating Christmas in July might actually have the date right as far as we know.

The reason we celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December is because Christmas traditions developed from northern hemisphere pagan celebrations of the winter solstice. The winter solstice was a symbol of rebirth and awakening; and it meant celebrations with feasting and family. A pagan solstice feast would have been very different from the Christmas we know but there would have some elements common to both: as Christianity superseded paganism the people kept the traditions they liked, discarded the ones they didn't and invented some new ones. They wrapped it up in a different symbolism but they kept their holiday.

Take the Christmas tree as an example: it is actually a fairly recent tradition for the British and their cultural descendents. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert introduced the tree to popular culture - the tree is a much older Scandinavian/Germanic tradition, and one can only imagine that Victoria thought it a nicer tradition to introduce than sauerkraut with Christmas dinner.

The traditional form for a Christmas tree is a pine tree. But for me Christmas isn't Christmas without a small gum for a tree. They're buggers to decorate and a lot more labour intensive than the fake pines but I like them. It's what my family have always done. Not a wholesale rejection of the tradition but a slight twist on it. A lot of people go for a cold lunch instead of the roast and hot pudding these days.

Take home message: Christmas changes with the times but it still marches on. The ghost of Christmas future might point to less people attending Midnight Mass and less nativity models but he'll still point to a lot of people celebrating Christmas.

Christmas in Australia is now more a cultural festive season than a religious one.
I doubt we would ever not celebrate this time of year.
Religious or not, Christmas and Santa Claus should always be part of our lives.

I imagine that we will be hearing from the hard multiculturalists who are forever demanding more out of the Aussie taxpayers hide to put bread of their tables, and the hating fundamentalists of the Atheism Religion as we usually do come any Christian event. There will be usual cultural cringe of the Fabian Socialists who fly low under the radar as "Progressives", not imagining that the electorate are smart enough to look up the history and goals of that movement.

Apart from that, Australian families will largely do as they always have done, enjoy one of the few rests and festivals available to them.

Special thoughts for the lone out there. Especially the sick and any who have been alienated against their children (PAS), which is common for grandparents as well as separated spouses. Illness is a cruel mistress, creating social barriers and doesn't go away for a special day or few. Not seeing family, and particularly the young as they enjoy the ordinary, mundane but very enjoyable events of life is tragic.

I've no idea of the historical accuracy of Christmas Day, the alleged day that Christ was born ? Does it really matter ? The event was over two thousand years ago, whether it ever happened at all ? All made with good grace and an abundance of sincerity and good humour.

And, I couldn't agree with you more ONE UNDER GOD, the crass commercialism, the boring adverts, people maxing (sic) out their credit cards just trying to make a family member happy by purchasing an XBox or similar. Come mid January the Bank statements start rolling in with promises of deferred payment...? Soon, in reality we'll still be paying off accounts and debts, originating from Christmas, two years ago, and so it goes on. All in the name of overzealous commercialism targeting those who can least afford it ?

For the record, I love everything about Christmas ! Moreover, I'll not attempt to introduce any form of academic analysis as to the meaning or reasons that we in the western world, pursue the day in such a regular or an unvarying manner. As I mentioned in a previous piece. It's my belief that the 25th December, is the day set aside by Christians as the day Christ was born, thus it's the birthday of Jesus Christ.

Is it accurate, is it the true day and date Jesus was born, I don't know ? Nor care. To me it's merely symbolic, is all. It's the day we all seem to celebrate, with our family, friends even neighbours. A day set aside for love, friendship, happiness and gift giving. I've no interest whatsoever whether or not we're all mistaken. So what.

It can't be a bad thing, bringing us all together in peace and harmony, love, companionship, and celebration. A happy and joyous event and in my books, as one who's seen some pretty awful events in my life, committed by one person to another, it's far better than any alternative, believe me ?

To answer your question, I believe Santa is merely just another part of a young child's mythical childhood, similar to that of fairies and superman etc. I believe, as a father and grandfather, that children should be allowed to be children and slowly grow out of their childish ways in their own time, and in their own way, progressing naturally into the next phase of their life. Time enough they should be compelled to confront life's tougher challenges. While they're little children, it's Santa and anything else they may wish to pretend, in their childlike imagination !

"Pagans" weren't necessarily northern Europeans until the northerners took over Rome in the 500's and the Christian faith spread from there, the Roman empire was the "Pagan" world onto which Christianity and later Islam encroached. I really must challenge much of what you've just said ! Where you've sought to disregard your own abilities to write lucidly and coherently, with correct spelling and logical syntax.

Actually, I've been reading most of your threads and Topics for the past couple of years now, and if everyone on this Forum could write as clearly and as succinctly as you, it would indeed be a real pleasure to read it. I may have mentioned to you previously, for some of my many sins, I was consigned to the Police Academy for a couple of years. At that time it was decided by those who 'know', recruits who possessed undergraduate degrees, would make much better and smarter cops.

Thus it came to pass, we were saddled with a heap of educated idiots all wishing to become police. Cutting a long story short, marking examination papers became a nightmare, as most of them could barely construct a decent sentence or create paragraphs, in fact describe clearly a relatively simple incident, with correct spelling ? Nor could they transcribe accurately, in their official notebooks, an 'adopted statement' of a basic motor vehicle accident ? And these people, were supposed to be the new breed - well educated, but almost illiterate !

Be assured BELLY, you've no worries my friend with much of what you write. Though to be fair, apparently in modern University, very little notice is taken, with issues of poor spelling or inadequate grammar, as long as the Examiner can understand their answers, that's all that matters ? Afraid, the Courts' don't accommodate that particular view, too well ?

But look at my first posts here and see a difference.

Yet there too I found the Humorous side.
After I became one of the six RTA delegates representing NSW at the peak body, Enterprise Bargaining Unit my news letter saw a well meaning few make up a cover sheet for it,all in good fun.
It depicted me as that teddy bear who likes honey, not remembering his name.
It said *Belly Bear my spelling is OK but my words wobble and the letters end up in the wrong place*
Mate taking the Micky out of myself always lets me do it, in a friendly way, to my mates
And bloke as I became the voice for near a third of this states road workers latter a union official, I found my true view of myself an aid in remembering I was only there to express the views of those I served.

OUG it started out hand written and then photo copied each copy as well as sending it via fax.
