G'day to you HASBEEN...

You know, you never cease to amaze me with some of your exploits. Still, if you can master military (Naval) aviation, there'd be very little that could stop you I should think.

Your time at Bathurst (The Hardie Ferodo 500?) with the huge Fords and Holdens would be fairly easy for you, with your flying background ? Interestingly, there appears to be no real dichotomy with the Sydney Hobart Yacht race, and Bathurst 500, though I guess there is ?

I should think that anything equestrian would be a real challenge to most people. For years I always harboured an opinion based on my own ignorance that horse racing...well there's nothing to it really ? Until I had occasion to have some (rather negative) dealings with a reasonably good hoop. He really enlightened me as to how tough, dangerous, and how electrifying and inspiring it is, to ride thoroughbreds in gallops racing !

So in my opinion to assist your daughter with show jumping, just adds another amazing string to your already burgeoning bow there HASBEEN !

In my own case It's really quite remarkable, how few opportunities I had, to explore other sports as a teenager, coming as I did from the inner Western Suburbs of Sydney, in the 1940's and 50's. Still, I was fortunate enough to find the two sports I really did love, Rugby League, trained at Pratten Park, Ashfield, and Cricket, practised at St Luke's Oval, Burwood.

Hi there ONTHEBEACH...

Sailing sounds pretty good to me but the other two...well, I can't handle anything that has a requirement for me to go underwater ! Whether it's in an enclosed, tiled swimming pool, or in open water. Anything that might attach itself to my foot or leg, will result in me scrambling ashore devoid of all dignity whatsoever, for someone over seventy years of age, it's not a nice look ! I can swim a bit, but that's the limit ?

Thank you all for your timely contributions.

Dear O Sung Wu,

Welcome back - missed you.

My sport of choice would have to be hiking.
I have always loved to hike, but I really learned to
love it when we'd lived in Los Angeles and spent
many of our holidays in Yosemite National Park,
(in Northern California), a wilderness of
evergreen forests, high meadows, and sheer walls of
granite. The spectacular Yosemite Valley, made quite
an impression. As did Banff National Park in Canada.

If everything goes well, we're planning a holiday to
Tassie next year - and hiking is definitely on the agenda.

cont'd ...

I forgot to add that with hiking you get to enjoy
spectacular scenery, and appreciate the beauty of
nature. There are also - usually a choice of hiking routes,
and you can also incorporate and enjoy canoeing,
and other water sports on nearby lakes and streams
at most National Parks.

Ah o sung wu you find "there appears to be no real dichotomy with the Sydney Hobart Yacht race, and Bathurst 500, though I guess there is" & there most definitely IS, & you can include the horses too.

You see, after school all that exercise & physical training was hard to fit in. I moved on to the other sports, where instead of physical effort, the sportsman/woman merely has to provide the finesse to control the power provided by an engine, wind or an animal. I like to suggest that these sports avoid all that uncouth sweating & such, but it is not true. You can get very sweaty driving around Bathurst, winding a winch on a yacht, or riding a horse in a cross country event.

Yes The Hardie Ferodo 500. In 68 I took second in the Holden Dealer Team Monaro, but I had won the Bathurst 100 in a 2.5L F1 Brabham Repco at Easter. In those days, when Formula 1 cars were still available to private teams, the Bathurst 100 was second only to the Aus Grand Prix. The 500 had yet to become a big deal, & was not even televised.

In the words of the famous actress, why don't you come up & see me some time. I'm sure you would enjoy a run through the boarder ranges, wind in your hair, if you still have any of course
