I'm sure that Aborigines would not have been
interviewed for the Herald article. Afterall
their opinions in those days didn't count for
much amongst the Whites who thought of themselves
as the "superior" race. As Kath Walker once wrote:
"Though baptized and blessed and bibled
We are still taboo and libelled
You devout salvation sellers
Make us equal not fringe dwellers."
I would like to think that many things have changed
since those early days. That much has been achieved
that tolerance and understanding has broadened out
and that bigotry is in retreat. We can know now a
great deal about the history of Indigenous-Settler
relations. But knowing brings burdens which can
be shirked by those living in ignorance. With knowledge
the question is no longer what we know but what we are
not to do, and that's a much harder matter to deal with.
It will continue to perplex us for many years to come.
