There is one other thing no politician has bought up, what idiot had things built that they could burn after all they already burnt down 1 detention center in Australia.

They should have thought about that before they awarded the contract.

$10 says the scum will do it again in the future if they don't get what they want.

Steel frame and plenty of corrugated iron with rock wool, perhaps?

Criminals manage to set fire to gaols with bedding and furniture. Maybe fire retardant and insect unfriendly materials for bedding.

I reckon the best solution is to be proactive and not end up with them using the appeals process to further their stay to get advantage over authorities.

Follow Denmark and make the decision of the Immigration Department final, with no appeals allowed. Denmark has a maximum of 1 week turnaround. Where the person will not return to his previous country for some reason and some countries don't want troublemakers back, Denmark sends the person to any other country that will take them.

It is ridiculous that Australia has created a rod for its own back and a huge hole in the federal budget by not only allowing appeals agaicnt the informed decisions of Immigration (as advised by DOFA, but also by funding agencies and lobbyists to second-guess Immigration (and create on-going business for themselves).

Easy,

Let them be tried and convicted under Nauru law, then excluded from seeking asylum, as criminals are excluded under the UNHCR charter.

Shameful that you fellas apparently posses so little humanity.

(let me get this straight - you people represent what's best about Western culture?....Amazing!)

How would you like to be treated like this because you've decided to flee to safety?

Don't dismiss it because it's from New Matilda. It's commentary from the people who were charged with looking after asylum seekers on Nauru.

Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
