Because it has no deity, Buddhism is technically not a religion - just a belief system, albeit with ceremony and ritual.

It's a religion in the same sense that baldness is a hair colour and not collecting stamps is a hobby.

However it doesn't make it immune from violent practices. Even the Dalai Lama has a reputation for oppressing rival groups and is even more homophobic than the Pope.

Another thing all religions have in common is that they are all based on a fear of death and offer some sort of eternal existence - otherwise they are inherently worthless.

The eager notion of some sort of pending final apocalypse as a justification and resolution of belief seems more like the result of impatience than enlightenment.

At the end of the day, all living things share genes, dna etc, so

Buddhism is a non-theistic religion. Religions do not have to incorporate a deity. You are defining religion in terms of the religion you are familiar with. It is not essential that a religion incorporate belief in a deity.
