There are threats to both society and individuals arising from extreme religious fundamentalism, when adherents become radicalised by the religion through a demand for unquestioning obedience from its leadership. This loyalty demand coupled with radicalised dogma, and the control of adherents actions by those in authority, often claiming to be the spokesperson of god, or even god himself, can have disastrous effects for not only people outside the religion, but those indoctrinated within, generally refereed to as a cult following. We have had many examples of the disasters of a cult following in Australia and over seas. Its my opinion that under certain circumstances religion is a very dangerous weapon.
Fortunately for them and us, the vast majority of religious adherents obtain some positive good from their devotion, and often society does as well, as religious are known for their "good works", all in all it mostly has a benign effect on society causing no great harm. BUT on the fringes of religion there are very dangerous operatives, with crazed ideas, and hateful intentions towards others.
