Even then, it was clear that differing methods of calculating and assessing what was a Covid death meant that the comparisons were largely useless. But still they were made and treated as though they had mythical meaning. Now three years down the track, the data is being assembled – and it shows how disastrously wrong the lockdown, and later, the vaccine mania was.
We now know that the locking people within their homes was exactly the wrong policy. Researchers struggle to find examples of people died as a result of outdoor exposure to the virus. There are now any number of papers and analyses that show that lockdowns were a mess.
Equally persuasive is the growing knowledge of excess deaths. While comparing deaths assigned to the virus is questionable due to differing definitions, ‘excess deaths’ statistics isn’t. And what do the data show? Well, in Australia excess deaths rates are the highest since WW2. While about half of those excess are Covid deaths, the rest are largely unexplained to date. But even at the time of the lockdowns people were warning of the problems of missed medical appointments, missed diagnoses, and delayed treatments.
Tellingly, international numbers are now becoming available. Sweden, long derided for not locking down, is now seen to have the lowest excess death rate in Europe and indeed the world. Swedish excess deaths per 100000 in the Covid era is much less than Australia
