What a RELIEF to read that others feel as I do... I have always hated Nicole Kidman, can't stand her and just do not get the whole 'Nicole Kidman' thing. I hate being told how much we're supposed to love 'our nic' (???) WHO loves her? I certainly don't and nobody I know loves her and WHY is she 'ours'???

I know people who have known and worked with Nicole and I can say that no-one, absolutely no-one, has ever spoken of her in glowing terms, rather, they describe her as rude, heartless, cold and calculating, Corinda's story (earlier) is very similar to the stories I've heard. I'm so sick of seeing her on the cover of every magazine, in every newspaper, on the news (??? why is she on the news???), on every 2nd DVD cover. Nicole works the media and publicity machine relentlessly. An example, her phone is being bugged... what does Nicole do? She notifies the 5.00 news of course... this is big news, her father appears on the news asking for privacy for poor 'nic' ???? You're asking for privacy by broadcasting it on the news? I cannot tell you when I have ever seen Cate Blanchett on the 5.00 news.

Oh and with regards to 'our Kylie', if you haven't seen this, please do take a look: http://www.heavy.com/index.php?videoPath=/content/contagious/flash_video/kylieMmm&partner=aff36
It's Kylie doing ...well, um, a mechanical bull.

i think the reason, that the subject of nicole kidman fascinates me so much, is the fact that it's sociological, and many theories can be hung on the phenomenon.

For example; Australia as a simulcra of a 70's Carry On movie ...Mark Latham was Sid James. John Howard the headmaster who doesn't quite get it...Kim Beazley (guest starring) as Tony Hancock. Kylie Minogue of course is Barbra Windsor...Geoffery Rush becomes Frankie Howard, rather than Peter Sellers, Rupert Murdoch as the evil mayor / real estate agent / councilor / millionaire whatever, who wants to control the plot and eat all the scenery...Steve Erwin...
the hero who saves the nation ...Nicole as the person that opens Public Buildings by cutting ribbons, launches ships with bottles of champagne but gets caught in a compromising situation towards the end of the film with the mayor / real estate millionaire etc; and is exposed and ruined but he because
of his wealth, returns in the sequel,

Yes Peta, I viewed Kylie riding a mechanical bull...which somehow prompted this posting

Just to put things in perspective with the 167 results for "i hate nicole kidman", which is 184 now, the search for leonardo dicaprio 154, recameron diaz 183, tom hanks 254, julia roberts 681, tom cruise 859. searching for "i love X" instead, nicole returned 1760 results, the same as Julia Roberts. Tom returned less, only 1016. Leonardo returned 1150 and Cameron a paltry 345. This doesn't really prove anything other than i have too much time on my hands, but still i found it interesting.

Obviously 'our nic' is popular. But surely there is room for dissent.. And what's beauty got to do with it?? Should we praise everyone just because they are allegedly beautiful? I'm a man, so I'm hardly jealous. And frankly, a plastic-surgery enhanced nose doesn't do it for me anyway (just compare BMX Bandits to now if you don't believe me...). Then there's the thorny issue of 'popularity'. Millions of people like reality TV, but it doesn't necessarily follow that it's good for you, or worth watching. So just because lots of people like 'our nic', it doesn't mean we all should. Maybe it means that some of us are more discerning.

Beren - have never seen BMX film But I am intrigued to think Nic had the schnoz reshaped, and then got that Nod for The Hours with the fake one! Without the surgery, would she have had earlier Oscars recognition? quel horreur.

Real ugly is ignored by Hollywood. Fake ugly can win you an Oscar.
