As an example of how it should be done, I was on the concourse of Sydney Terminus Station one day back in the 1950s and two Constables had to arrest an old bloke, small, probably in his 70s who was very drunk, abusive and blasphemous.
He resisted arrest so they grabbed him, got a hand each in an armpit, lifted him off his feet and carried him cursing and ineffectually kicking to the Paddy Wagon, to the accompaniment of the genuine applause of the bystanders; I clapped along with the rest.
Bear in mind the police in those days had far more latitude than they do today.
