Some might ask; Whose this Danny Lim? Danny is a 78 years old chap, and one of the "characters" on the streets of inner Sydney, I've known Danny for many years, gentler soul you'll never meet . For most Danny wouldn't be given a second glance, but what makes Danny peculiar is he's a serial protester. On most days Danny travels in by train with his sandwich board covered with his latest message of protest, Danny is harmless. I got a call from a friend this morning to tell me Danny had been bashed a couple of days ago, not by a gang of street thugs, but by the coppers. Why I asked, Danny wouldn't harm a fly. Seems the story is, Danny was protesting in the the Queen Victoria building where the shopkeepers know him, one gives Danny a free cup of coffee most mornings he's there. A couple of smart young constables turn up on an unrelated matter, board with no action on that score, one constable takes upon himself to give Danny a "move on order". Danny was smashed to the floor leaving the 78 year old with a bloodied face, bystanders startled, and shopkeepers upset. Later in the day 200 people gathered outside Surry Hills cop shop to protest the heavy handed police treatment of Danny. Although Danny was obviously injured by the police tactics, the two officers made no attempt to aid or seek medical attention for Danny.

Dear Paul,

The use of force in this case was excessive considering Mr
Lim's age and as you say - he was not violent. What a tragic
case. The poor man was taken by paramedics to St Vincent's
Hospital in Sydney with internal skull damage. He's bee
diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. He told the police officers
that he suffers from PTSD and he will now need specialised
medical help. It's hard to believe that police officers could
do something like this.

I hope that severe action will be taken against those officers
and that the NSW Police force will pay a very high compensation to
Mr Lim - so that he can be looked after and receive all the
specialist medical care that he's going to need.

What a sick incident. No excuse!

Once again, trial by The Guardian before an official enquiry, with the leading Leftists jumping on the bandwagon. The only evidence is a video showing the person bring "pushed to the ground and handcuffed", which is a perfectly normal occurrence with a person resisting arrest. The silly old bugger could have moved on when requested to do so. He is obliged to obey a reasonable order.

A 78 year old man suffering PTSD (stress!) is an idiot for putting himself in that position.

No matter what the old man could have done- the facts remain
that th matter could have been handled better by professional
law enforcement officers who supposedly are trained in
handling all sorts of situations. This one was handled badly.
No ifs or buts.

It was the old man who ended up at St Vincent's Hospital with
internal skull damage. He's been diagnosed now with a subdural
hematoma and needs 2 walking sticks to get around. As a result
of police action. No matter how he may or may not have
behaved - the actions of properly trained police officers in
this case are inexcusable. And should be made sure this does
not happen again. The use of force here was excessive.

Danny Lim is an old little, thin fragile man. It
would not have taken many police officers to
arrest him. Why was his head bashed in? Why
this extreme behaviour on the part of the NSW police?
What is happening in that state?

Why making this political on this forum?
What's "Leftist" about this incident?
Complaining about the use of excessive force
by police on an unarmed old man is now
considered to be "Leftist?" And excusing police
excessive behaviour is now "Rightist?" How sick
and deranged is that!

I know, I know, next we'll have Marxists, Leftists, Socialists,
Communists, and all sort of other "ists," brought in to this
sad affair. Poor Mr Lim.

I do know Danny and I’m appalled at this use of excessive force on a harmless old man.

Hey ttbn,
"which is a perfectly normal occurrence with a person resisting arrest."

Two cops couldn't handle a frail old man without throwing him to the ground?
- Maybe that's the problem here.

"The silly old bugger could have moved on when requested to do so."
Maybe, but only because legally its a privately owned building.

"After being fined $500 for offensive behaviour, the Sydney magistrate Jacqueline Milledge, who was critical of the responding officers’ behaviour, ruled the signs might be cheeky but they were not criminally offensive."
http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/nov/22/serial-protester-danny-lim-in-hospital-after-discontinued-arrest-in-sydney-cbd
So he wasn't actually breaking any laws, just being a nuisance in a privately owned shopping centre.
And if he wasn't doing anything wrong, then what was the $500 fine for?
- Gotta make him guilty of something right?

"The man’s arrest was discontinued after he struggled with police and sustained an injury to his cheekbone."

Why discontinue the arrest after you injured him?
Why not just walk past and punch him in the face and keep on walking
- It wouldn't make any difference.

You defend the system, even when the system is wrong.
You can't just go a crap on old people like that, just because you can.
That old bloke wasn't causing any real harm.

Danny has been "protesting" inside the QVB and around the streets for years, he's never offensive, he stands there with his signs, doesn't harass passersby's, never offensive to shop keepers, as I said one shop gives him a free cup of coffee most days. The mate said the coppers were there initially on another matter, or they were just passing through as no one has fessed up that they made a complaint about Danny. The only crime Danny is guilty of is he's eccentric. Given his physical condition I'm surprised that he can still get around the streets with his sandwich board. If you watch the film carefully you will see the aggressive copper on the right actually kicks Danny from behind with his right foot, then moments later uses his right leg to trip Danny over onto the hard floor, so he can apply the handcuffs.

BTW; it was a passerby that rang the ambulance, not the coppers.

Blame the victim - the old fall-back position is still popular with some as is the general lack of compassion for the elderly and infirm, as long as it can be twisted into a sick political stance.

Not many watching that incident would be cheering at the display of excess brutality.

I suppose the two officers felt threatened for their own safety.

No 'compassion' (threadbare word) for the elderly and infirm.

I am older that this old idiot, and I say he has got what was coming for him at last. One minute the jerks are saying that old people should get out of the way, we are past it, nuisances, and so on. Next minute, when there's a political point to be scored, they are slobbering about 'compassion'.

This old goat is just being used by OLO's leading muck raker. It is unlikely that the incident would have got a mention if 'victim' hadn't been Asian.

A much more useful and honourable old person - Squadron Leader Johnson, last of the WW11 Dambusters - died this week at the age of 101. He was a Flight Sergeant at the time, and was among those who protected the West for idiots like Danny Lim and the rest of the ungrateful cranks now infesting it.

ttbn,
This has gone viral with at least 10 pages on Google and Chris Murphy is taking up Danny’s case pro bono.
Watch the news from now on and expect a couple of career changes or at the minimum postings to Bourke or Lightning Ridge.

Lets leave politics out of this. Lets leave ageism out of
this. Excessive force and bad training is at fault here.
The police could have simply escorted Mr Lim out without
hurling him to the floor and causing him serious injury.
He was unarmed and on his own. The situation should have
been handled more professionally. It wasn't.

It seems that policing, like everything else, is based on opinions and polls these days, not the law. I see that Constable Rolfe continues to be pursued and harassed by the media and the Leftist, lawless nutjobs, who probably should hope that they never need police assistance.

ttbn,
The trouble with this episode is that it was not based on the law.
The law doesn’t require two burly young men to throw a small, elderly man to the deck, in this case a hard ceramic deck and handcuff him.
I’m sure Chris Murphy will explain the law to all concerned.

ttbn, it looks like you have left yourself out on a 'lim" on this one. In typical Hansonite fashion you play the race card; "ASIAN" (my capitals).

Thanks Issy and AC, and the best social conscience on the Formum, Foxy along with rache for telling it like it is with truthfulness and honesty.

I don't know about this left wing, right wing nonsense, sometimes talking to Danny and that's not his real name, I would walk away thinking what in hell was he talking about. What i can say, knowing him personally, no way is he violent, he's not capable of violence.

For about 35 years a mystery man by the name of Arthur Stace would chalk in beautiful handwriting the word "Eternity" on Sydney's city footpaths, he did so many thousands of time. A reformed alcoholic who had turned to Christianity Arthur's was a message of hope to all. Also he was defacing public property, and under the law he could have been arrested, jailed and/or fined, he never was. Cold impersonal cities need their share of Danny's and Arthur's, not coppers with handcuffs to cart them away.

All the manhandling and so on is coming to us many times filtered. And, small, elderly men can often fight back like tomcats. I suggest we accept that the police were doing their job as per their training and for their own protection as well as for this bloody old nuisance's who should be indulging in a more relaxing pass time suited to his age.

Chris Murphy is a virtue-signalling lefty, as many of the lawyerly class are these days. You will probably also disagree with my contention that all these pests - irrespective of age - should be encouraged to stop wasting police time on their pathetic and anti-social personal ideas as to how things should be. The majority Australians manage to get along OK without making bloody nuisances of themselves.

ttbn,
It’s not coming filtered at all, the video says it all “In the first person”.
Police do not normally ‘discontinue’ an arrest unless ordered to do so by a superior officer or unless they realize that they are in error.

Watched the video. He was definitely resisting. If you are advised that you are under arrest and comply with instructions, you don't end up on the floor. As it was, he was eased onto to floor, not thrown. Get over it.

I believe in the 'horseshoe effect' in politics, where the extremes of left and right are not at opposite ends of a linear continuum, but like the shape of a horseshoe each end of the extremism approaches the other as it moves further from the moderate top centre. Put it in human terms Hitler was like Stalin and vice versa, not opposites but alike in many ways.

Hi david f,

Good to see you put up a post, yes true the rise of fascism was there in Australia during the 1920's and 30's. The Old Man would tell me how popular fascism was in Australia, as was communism at that time. The popularity of fascism is evidenced by the rise of the 'New Guard' paramilitary fascists organisation in the 1930's. At its height under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Campbell (actually Campbell held the rank of Lieutenant during WWI, Cambell was an educated man) with an "army" of 50,000 volunteer soldiers the New Guard, an off shoot of the 1920's 'Old Guard' which they opposed as being too inactive and ineffective they adopted a Mussolini style agenda of direct action. Much of their stated aims would sit well with some in Australia today.

ttbn,
Myopia is often a symptom of old age, fortunately I don’t suffer from it as my pistol scores attest, I don’t think that you’d be able to see the target at 25 metres.

- - - -

As an example of how it should be done, I was on the concourse of Sydney Terminus Station one day back in the 1950s and two Constables had to arrest an old bloke, small, probably in his 70s who was very drunk, abusive and blasphemous.
He resisted arrest so they grabbed him, got a hand each in an armpit, lifted him off his feet and carried him cursing and ineffectually kicking to the Paddy Wagon, to the accompaniment of the genuine applause of the bystanders; I clapped along with the rest.
Bear in mind the police in those days had far more latitude than they do today.

Humm Issy, did you not say you were born in 1880? Did they let you out the next morning? drunk yes, abusive yes, but you shouldn't have been blasphemous, what would the Pope think of a good Catholic lad like you, that was beyond the pale!

Yeah so what he's still a frail old man, not a 19 year old high on amphetamines and there's no need whatsoever for his face to connect with the pavement.
Even if it was you ttbn, you might tell yourself you deserved it, I'd still defend you and say the treatment was unfair, even if you give me shite for it.

I'll always try to stand up for what is right, regardless.
Having a badge doesn't give any cop a free pass to assault people needlessly.
Maybe in the old days, but not anymore.

200 people picketing the cop station.
Next the cops will spend 100k on a survey asking people why they don't have any respect for police, and what they can do to do things better and earn back the public trust.
The whole thing is bs, and a needless waste of time an money by thug cops that see people as the enemy and need to learn how to treat citizens with respect and decency.
