As far as I'm aware votes have always been counted locally, even in the days of Lang. They were then phoned, or in more isolated locations telegrammed to the central counting location in Sydney. I've read all Jack Lang's books, and books about him several times, and I can't recall that story. In 'The Turbulent Years' Lang mentioned men of the New Guard waiting in ambush on the Parrmatta Rd late on night for him. The purpose being to kidnap Premier Lang as he drove himself home from Sydney. The Old Man told me Lang did have a big old black car, Lang go a tip off and was able to avoid the kidnappers.

My grandfather for years acted as returning officer at his small local school. When the polls closed at 8pm in those days, a count of about 40 ballots took not long, granddad would then drive his truck down to the Post Office and wake one of the old ladies who ran the joint so he could phone in the count to Orange, the main polling location. Mum always claimed if a local cow cockie asked, the old bloke would fill in a ballot for him and cross off his name, didn't want a fine. BTW; the count was always Country Party 40, Labor nil.

If there was a demand for a recount then the original ballots would be needed, I don't think that it was an incident that was of any historical importance.
At around the same time, there were a few party workers beaten up, dad always carried a pistol.
