Give over Mr O, you are getting past boring.
SR no one asked the ratbag teen age girl to stick her brainwashed nose into everyone elses business. She asked for it, & deserves every bit of condemnation she gets, & so do a few others, present company included. Posted by Hasbeen, Thursday, 31 December 2020 3:43:02 PM

So Mr Opinion says, "The EU has its roots in the ambitions of post-WW2 leaders to prevent further wars between nationalist states by denying them the economic means of waging war. This of course began with a Western Europe-wide control over steel and coal production needed to produce tanks, planes and guns, thus keeping a resurgence of nationalism in check."
Well, its good to see that he no longer seems to be asserting that the EU was created as a response to USSR domination. (Just for the record here's his first post's claim: ".. the EU was always meant to be a political unification to prevent the USSR from dominating the continent and not for the purpose of free trade. Free trade was just a byproduct of the political unification."). So it looks my posts detailing his complete lack of knowledge in this area have provoked him to at least do a cursory bit of research into the EU's history. But unfortunately his quote above gives the impression that he still doesn't understand the mechanisms/policies of how the ECSC/EEC would achieve its goals of European peace and prosperity. He seems to be saying that their plan was to limit the resources, particularly the amount of steel or coal, that a country could produce or attain. But it was actually the exact opposite- the goal of the ECSC/EEC's was for countries in the community to be able to either buy any amount of the resources they wanted so they wouldn't need to start a war to get them or sell all they wanted so they could create wealth for themselves. And also to interlink/entwine their economies so much that it would be economic suicide to try to start a war. ECSC/EEC's method to achieve this was to create a common market where goods and labour moved freely by removing restrictions/obstacles applied by countries (such as tariffs, quotas, etc) and large cartels (such as price fixing) that limited other's access to resources/markets. Dear Hasbeen,
How's it going old cock? Good I hope. I remember you going all knock kneed about women in burquas now it is some teenager who has you in palpitations. Why do you feel so threatened by them? Why do you feel the need to slag off repeatedly against a girl who is standing up for what she believes in? So much so that “she deserves every bit of condemnation she gets”. So in your mind she deserved the sticker produced by a Canadian oil company depicting her rape. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8061899/Canadian-oil-firm-uses-sick-cartoon-Greta-Thunberg-raped-promote-business.html Why on earth do you think that is okay? Does she threatened you (and them) that much that you celebrate every bit of it? She is a teenager for crying out loud. Really sick and disgusting behaviour from all and sundry and you should be ashamed. Posted by SteeleRedux, Thursday, 31 December 2020 4:17:50 PM

thinkabit,
I think I'm correct on both counts. I can defend both claims successfully. All I've said is that there were two reasons. There are possibly more reasons. Posted by Mr Opinion, Thursday, 31 December 2020 4:30:11 PM

SR,
Caught you out again: "JPMorgan's Malcolm Barr wrote in a research note Thursday BEFORE the deal was finalized. "The bad news for the UK, in our view, is that the EU appears to have secured a deal which allows it to retain nearly all of the advantages it derives from its trading relationship with the UK while giving it the ability to use regulatory structures to cherry-pick among the sectors where the UK had previously enjoyed advantages in the trading relationship." Note that this comment was made before the deal was finalised and before Barr had any access to the details including the specific parts that blocked the use of arbitrary regulations being used to create a barrier. The UK can export its goods free of customs duties etc to the EU. There is some paperwork, but otherwise it is business as usual. Posted by shadowminister, Friday, 1 January 2021 5:39:14 AM

More on your fantastic deal.
“The public has delivered an overwhelming thumbs-down to the Brexit trade deal, just 17 per cent saying they think it will be “good” for the country.
Even among Leave voters, only 27 per cent told a survey that the deal was a success – and only one in three Conservative supporters said it was.
But YouGov found that a majority of Britons do want MPs to approve the agreement in the Commons today – by a wide margin of 57 per cent to 9 per cent.
The results are a significant blow to Boris Johnson, as he told MPs it was a “fantastic” deal that had achieved something “which we were told was impossible”. ”

Dear Hasbeen,
Even the more ardent Brexiteers acknowledge that there will be a hit of 4-5% decrease in the UK economy for many years to come. Perhaps instead of the EU collapsing the UK will turn out to be a salutary warning for those who may look to leave. Indeed perhaps the buyers remorse which has already started to settle in will intensify and the UK will come knocking on the EU's door once again.
