That's precisely the reason we need to take up the
3 suggestions I offered earlier for improving the
quality of the debate:
1) Stop personal attacks.
2) Promote greater knowledge - scholars, policy makers,
economists, national security experts, and the media all
need to work together to disseminate China knowledge
and research. This would help improve understanding of
the issues and put news stories in context.
3) Reach across disciplines - scholars and policy makers
from different disciplines for example - economists and
national security - need to have fundamental discussions
about the assumptions and frameworks inherent in each
discipline.
I'm sounding like a broken record - but a simplistic
"pro China""Anti China" division ignores complex
questions and shuts down the conversation. It does not
help us to do that.
