Mate you must be a new Australian. The term mate is hardly definitive and is often used aggressively in our culture. This applies in some degree to friend as well. As to Christensen doing anything illegal show me where I have contended that he had. There are plenty of over weight, middle aged, obnoxious Australian men finding their young future wives in Philippine bars. Seeking compliant Asian brides is a feature of the more anti-PC crowd who struggle with the autonomy displayed by typical Australian women.

I'm not saying this is exactly how Christensen's relationship has evolved but without further information it is walking and talking like a duck.
