But if you ever do decide that ignorance isn't bliss, on this issue you could do worse than read the Wikipedia entry which touches on the facts and Blainey's chapter in 'The Steel Master' on the issue where he makes the point that not only did the Japanese not turn the pig-iron into munitions but the proceeds from the sale were used by BHP to restructure their own facilities to make arms for Australia ie Japan funded (partially) Australia's rearmament.

Pig iron is grey iron which cannot be worked (forged, extruded, rolled etc.) even at temperature and lacks tensile strength. No good for construction. But Japan lacked iron and any pig-iron products made Japan's iron-ore supplies available for munitions. Even if Bob the Pig didn't know what Japan would do with it , any supplies he approved in Cabinet would aid Japan's military. Pig iron is used in engine blocks and engine housings - is that the "construction" you meant?
