If you can't see the ambulance or the ambos themselves, the sirens and flashers on ambulances are difficult to distinguish from those of other emergency vehicles.

But I reckon even quite thick people know the difference between ambos and cops. And in the stories I linked to, the casualties in both cases were inside - one in a bar, the other in a unit block. I'm pretty sure the ambos would have got out of their vehicles and gone in on foot, rather than driving their ambulances inside a building
